A few minutes later, when Freya helped the nearly exhausted Selina out of the Basement, all that remained inside was a mangled heap of flesh. Foul-smelling blood had pooled on the floor, bulky organs lay scattered about, and blood had spattered as far as seven or eight meters away. The scene was horrifyingly gruesome.
Yet it was not Freya, who had come to rescue her sister, who had done all this. It was Selina, once she had broken free.
Selina had gained no transcendent abilities, but extreme fear, despair, guilt, regret, anger, and every other emotion pushed to its limit had shattered her original state of mind. To protect herself, she had formed a new, dominant personality. This new self feared nothing and had no moral limits when it came to protecting herself and her younger sister. Selina had turned completely dark.
The first thing this darker Selina did upon emerging was kill Miss Sigma with her own hands—the woman who had, in a sense, made her this way. She left a scene of utter carnage behind.
In the castle's first-floor hall, brilliant Magic Lamps cast light through crystal fittings, illuminating the spacious room.
The air, however, was thick with the smell of blood. Selina and Freya walked out of the Basement as if nothing had happened. Freya helped her weakened sister onto a sofa in the sitting room to catch her breath. Around the sofa and on the spiral staircase leading upstairs, seven or eight servants, men and women alike, lay in pools of blood.
