Though they had retreated behind the towering walls and activated the Human City-State's Defensive Magic Circle, two Legendary Rank Transcendents, one magic circle, and more than ten thousand soldiers were nowhere near enough to stand against a Calamity Rank Skeleton Lord. And the Skeleton Lord had not come alone. Reinforcements arrived in its wake, with troops from several other directions converging until an army of tens of thousands surrounded the city-state so tightly that not even water could seep through.
Green turned his gaze there as well, looking down over the entire battlefield from a vantage much like the God's-Eye View in an RTS game.
With the Skeleton Lord at his command, Green's confidence soared. He did not think much of this Human City-State. But a city-state that had survived from the previous era was bound to hold reliable information about the Mist World, so Green would rather make it submit than destroy it.
Unlike the tribal towns Green had subdued before, this Human City-State was a true metropolis, no smaller than Stinnard. Its population could not be less than three hundred thousand, perhaps more. In extreme circumstances, that population alone could supply thirty or even fifty thousand soldiers.
Yet just as Green was counting his chickens, a surge of Psychic Energy erupted from the city-state's center. It was as though some enormous beast from the primordial wilderness had awakened: cold, murderous, suffocating! Then a languid, irritated presence burst forth, enveloping the entire Human City-State in an instant. Its people were both thrilled and terrified. This was their final guardian, but also a dreadful nightmare.
There was a reason Calamity Rank was called Calamity Rank. Such beings needed no malice; a casual movement could bring mortal disaster upon ordinary people.
