Late at night.

The house the plump Descartes visited belonged to a man named Arkansas.

With Green's arrival, the Anomalies Bureau's vast intelligence apparatus sprang into action. It soon uncovered everything about the house.

Arkansas was a professor at the Imperial Academy. At thirty-five, he was remarkably young and accomplished, an expert in Shaping Magic who had received a research grant from the Kingdom. No one had expected a man like him to have ties to a Revolutionary Army intelligence agent.

"The Revolutionary Army Intelligence Department really does get everywhere!" Green exclaimed as he read the report. If powerful Transcendents had not kept it in check, this rotten Kingdom of Lorenzo would have been in its grave long ago.

Green handed the report to Captain Ruston and strode toward the house. "Come on. Let's find out what kind of man Professor Arkansas really is."

Strictly speaking, there still was not enough evidence to prove that Descartes and Professor Arkansas were Revolutionary Army spies. All they had done was meet late at night. Their relationship might have been unsavory, or what they did together might have been painful to watch, but neither was a crime. Green and Cyrabelle, however, did not care about evidence.

Green strode ahead, with Captain Ruston close behind. Ruston did not know how Green planned to handle this, but it was a rare chance to spend time alone with his superior. In fact, he hoped Green would do something improper. He had learned in the army that the quickest way to get close to a superior was to do something disreputable together.

Ruston was destined for disappointment. Green did not sneak inside. He walked straight up to the front door, waved a hand, and it opened.

Ruston could clearly sense at least three warning and defensive Magic
