"Oh? You're finally going after Xiweina Ye?" Brenton said with a sigh. "I remember you promising not to kill her."
"I've given her plenty of chances. She's the one who refused to take them and insisted on competing with me," Archbishop Link said evenly. "Once she stepped into the contest, she had to bear the consequences of that choice. Even she is no exception."
"Fine. I hope you don't regret it someday." Brenton spread his hands, unconcerned. "I can make a move, but I can't guarantee I'll succeed. That woman is formidable. Even Prince Biden died. Who knows what other trump cards she has?"
Then something seemed to occur to him. Brenton narrowed his eyes at Archbishop Link. "Hey! You're sending me to kill her because you want to test how deep her waters run, aren't you? Better yet, you'd like us to take each other down. Am I right?"
Archbishop Link said nothing. Whether he agreed or simply considered the question beneath an answer was anyone's guess.
Brenton did not press him. "You may be disappointed, though. If I find I can't beat her, I'll retreat at once. I'm not one of those lackeys willing to lay down their lives for you."
"Do as you please," Archbishop Link said coldly. He seemed not to care what his younger brother thought, so long as Brenton obeyed his orders.
Then he turned and walked out of the cathedral's chapel, one step at a time...
