Hercules seemed to understand that too, so he had not spent much effort hiding it.
Yet when Zeus and the Goddess of the Light of Wisdom arrived together, they discovered, to their surprise, that everyone had long since vanished!
The entire Divine Kingdom lay desolate and silent, without a trace of life. Even Hercules's temple had crumbled, as though it had been abandoned for ages.
Zeus and the Goddess of the Light of Wisdom exchanged a glance. Each saw the worry in the other's eyes. Neither had expected this.
What they had thought would be an easy capture had turned into a deeper mystery with Modi's and Hercules's sudden disappearances.
What had happened? Had they gone into hiding on their own, or had someone abducted them? Or were they both already dead?
Even the Goddess of the Light of Wisdom, renowned for her wisdom, felt unprecedented pressure. "It seems we've run into serious trouble this time," she said gravely.
Zeus nodded. "But this might also be an opportunity. The Lord of Light fell, Hercules vanished, and now Modi and his subordinates are gone. Every one of these events reeks of conspiracy."
"Indeed," the Goddess of the Light of Wisdom said. "But this conspiracy isn't aimed at us. It's aimed at 'Them.'"
Zeus gave a bitter smile. "Yes. Much as I hate to admit it, we're the fish caught in the crossfire."
