Devil Fruits are extraordinary fruits that grant supernatural abilities after being eaten. They are considered rare and extremely valuable treasures of the sea. Their powers depend not only on the fruit itself, but also on the user’s physical strength, technique, stamina, and development 3 127.

Pure-energy Logias such as the Flame-Flame, Rumble-Rumble, and Glint-Glint Fruits are especially unusual because their elements lack a fully tangible physical form 10.

Physical Energy and Stamina

Devil Fruit abilities normally consume the user’s physical energy. A Logia user cannot produce an unlimited amount of their element, because their Lineage Factor converts bodily energy into the power’s substance or force 7 10.

Doctor Gu Jian connects this phenomenon to Haki and Lineage Factors. His research detects wavelength fluctuations similar to Haki in Zoan fruits, suggesting that Devil Fruits can possess wills of their own 276.

Not every fruit is confirmed to be conscious. The evidence is strongest for awakened fruits and certain Zoans.

Origins and History

According to Doctor Gu Jian and Nicholas, the ancient God Tribe used the Twin Trees’ Primordial Energy to create Uranus and Poseidon before transforming the world and producing other forms of life 268 269.

Nika later emerged among the God Tribe’s emotionless slaves as the first being to display emotion through a smile. The liberation warriors gathered under the name D and eventually opposed the God Tribe. To preserve the damaged world, Nika’s warriors sacrificed their physical forms and passed their wills and powers into the forms later known as Devil Fruits. The God Tribe modified their Lineage Factors during this process 269.

Rocks D. White later attempted to create a Devil Fruit with its own life and consciousness through the White Plan. Charlotte Linlin states that the project used her Soul-Soul Fruit to investigate and construct a soul. The project was considered a failure because it produced only Homies such as Zeus and Prometheus, but Ye Mu emerged as an unexpected success: a Devil Fruit that developed its own life, will, and consciousness 207.

Notable Anomalies

Dual Devil Fruit Users

The accepted rule is that one person cannot possess two Devil Fruits. Ye Mu violates this rule by wielding the Flame-Flame and Heat-Heat Fruits simultaneously. Doctor Gu Jian detects multiple Lineage Factors and unusual wavelengths within Ye Mu’s body, theorizing that the fruits’ consciousness and an unidentified fifth Lineage Factor allow him to survive 227 277 278.

Blackbeard is later identified as the only other known individual besides Ye Mu to possess the abilities of more than one Devil Fruit 502.

Misnamed or Hidden Fruits

Official names may conceal a fruit’s true nature. The Gum-Gum Fruit is initially cataloged as a Paramecia that grants a rubber body, but later information identifies it as the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika.
