Crocodile operates from Rainbase while presenting himself as Alabasta’s hero. In secret, he seeks Pluton and plans to overthrow the Nefertari family, believing the royal family possesses knowledge of the ancient weapon. 24

When Ryan arrives in Alabasta looking for Nico Robin, Crocodile immediately treats him as a potential obstacle. He orders rumors spread that Ryan intends to seize Yoru, using Ryan’s reputation to attract further conflict. 22

Defeat in Rainbase

Ryan confronts Crocodile at his castle and offers information about Pluton in exchange for Robin. Ryan falsely claims that Pluton is located on Laugh Tale and attributes the information to Scopper Gaban and Silvers Rayleigh. 24

Crocodile rejects the bargain and attacks with the Sand-Sand Fruit. Ryan withstands his sandstorm with Armament Haki, pierces his elementalized body, and avoids his attacks through Observation Haki. Crocodile is then defeated and left demoralized. 25

Fujitora arrives during the confrontation and wounds Crocodile as well, leaving him unable to challenge either opponent. 25

Abandoning the Search for Pluton

After the defeat, Crocodile admits that he overestimated his strength. He abandons his search for Pluton because Robin has been taken and the trail has been broken. Instead, he decides to finish the Alabasta conflict before eventually heading to the New World with Mr. 1. 26

The Peak Challenge

Crocodile continues manipulating events after Ryan leaves Rainbase. He arranges the Peak Challenge, presenting Yoru and information about Pluton as prizes to lure powerful swordsmen into Alubarna. 30 33

He creates seven sand arenas and publicly displays Yoru after Vista confirms its authenticity. Ryan destroys his arena with Two-Sleeved Green Snake, instantly eliminating the challengers assigned to it. 33

After Ryan wins the final battle, Crocodile throws Yoru to him and announces that information about Pluton is also inside the box. He then leaves while the remaining participants turn their attention toward Ryan. 35
