Background / History
Lory is a young woman from the Grand Line who is among the captives rescued from the Pino Pirates’ slave ship. After being freed, she approaches Ryan first and introduces herself while withholding the reason she had traveled to the South Blue. 8
Her knowledge of Grand Line destinations and navigation persuades Ryan to let her travel with him, despite his initial refusal because of her lack of combat strength. She guides the group to the Goth Kingdom after a seven-day voyage. 8
Lory remains with the crew through the Goth Kingdom incident and is astonished—but excited—to learn that Ryan has taken the king hostage. 15 During the voyage toward Reverse Mountain, she becomes the crew’s cook, although her food is widely regarded as terrible. 16
While traveling toward Jaya, Lory recognizes the floating island Weatheria as her home and stops Fujitora from lowering it far enough to rupture its supporting bubble. She reunites with her grandparents, Haredas and Lia, there. 37
Although initially uncertain whether to remain with the crew after returning home, Lory ultimately chooses to continue the adventure. Ryan formally welcomes her as an official member before the crew departs for Water 7. 38 43
At Water 7, Lory reveals that she learned ship repair by watching Tom’s workers. Her explanation of how to repair the Soaring Dragon impresses Tom, who offers to make her his apprentice. She refuses but becomes the crew’s shipwright. 221
Years later, the crew reaches Karakuri Island, where an elderly woman recognizes Lory as her granddaughter. Lory learns that her father is Vegapunk and her mother was Alice, a gifted Weatheria meteorologist. Alice and Vegapunk conceived Lory to test a hypothesis about inherited genius rather than as romantic partners. After becoming pregnant, Alice fled the World Government, returned to Weatheria, and died giving birth. At Alice’s request, Haredas and Lia raised Lory without telling her the truth. 439 440
Lory struggles with the revelation: she is grateful for her life and companions, but grieves the mother she never knew. Ryan accompanies her to Weatheria, where she drinks a vial Alice left as the key to awakening a power implanted before her birth. Lory gains control over weather, then returns to Karakuri Island and shares her history with the crew and her grandmother. She later chooses to continue sailing rather than remain with her newly found relative. 441 443 445
Appearance
Lory is a petite teenage girl with a youthful appearance.
- Usually wears her hair in twin tails. 8
- Wears a pleated skirt. 8
- Has a notably small build, which Ryan repeatedly teases her about. 8 15
- Resembles her father, Vegapunk, strongly enough for her grandmother to recognize the likeness. 439
- Wears a Lolita dress and elaborate makeup when the crew adopts disguises in Dressrosa. 423
Personality
Lory is energetic, curious, and eager for adventure. Her enthusiastic descriptions of the Grand Line quickly inspire Ryan’s interest in traveling there, and she readily chooses the excitement of piracy over a quiet return home. 8 15
She is emotionally attached to Ryan and can become openly possessive when she thinks another woman is getting close to him. After Robin joins the crew, Lory repeatedly pulls Ryan away from her, partly from jealousy and partly because she suspects Robin may have hidden motives. 27 32 She and Robin also react angrily when dancers flirt with Ryan in Spring Queen City. 228
Despite her jealousy, Lory is caring toward the crew. She worries when Ryan and Beli enter danger, helps rescue Ryan from Shiki’s collapsing island, and remains loyal enough to leave Weatheria and continue sailing with the Ryan Pirates. 15 40 43
Lory believes family responsibilities should take priority over an individual’s pursuit of adventure, as she makes clear when the crew discusses Yasopp’s absence from Usopp’s life. 102 Although learning how she was conceived causes her deep pain, she can later recount her history calmly and takes comfort in having been loved by Lia, Ryan, and her companions. 441 443
Abilities & Skills
Navigation
Lory possesses practical knowledge of Grand Line routes and locations.
- Describes destinations including Gourmet City Puji, Spring Queen City, Alabasta, and the Florian Triangle. 8
- Navigates Ryan’s group from the South Blue to the Goth Kingdom. 8
- Uses maps to estimate the crew’s distance from Reverse Mountain. 16
- Helps guide the stone boat to Water 7. 44
- Learns navigational techniques exceptionally quickly through observation. Combined with her weather powers, this makes her especially effective at guiding the Soaring Dragon through the New World. 221 465
Knowledge of Weatheria
Having grown up on Weatheria, Lory understands its unique structure and dangers.
- Recognizes Weatheria while it is still suspended above the crew. 37
- Warns Fujitora that lowering the island further could burst the bubble supporting it. 37
- Helps identify the crew’s approximate location after they accidentally leave their ship behind. 38
- Possesses exceptional aptitude for meteorology, a field in which her mother, Alice, was a leading researcher. 221 440
Cooking
Lory serves as the Ryan Pirates’ cook.
- Prepares the crew’s meals during the voyage toward Reverse Mountain. 16
- Her cooking is notoriously poor; the crew generally avoids it unless they have no alternative. 16
- Mistakes Ryan choking on her food for tears of appreciation and becomes convinced that he loves her cooking. 16
Shipbuilding and Equipment
Lory can grasp technical procedures after observing them.
- Correctly explains how to repair damage to the Soaring Dragon after watching Tom’s shipwrights work; Tom praises her as a genius and offers her an apprenticeship, which she declines. 221
- Takes on the role of shipwright and is instructed by Ryan to observe the installation of the ship’s replacement naval gun. Tom supplies Treasure Tree Adam branches for repairs she may need to make later. 221 224
- Operates the Soaring Dragon’s H/PJ-17 naval gun during a battle with the Marines, having learned its operation through observation. 318
Weather Control
Before Lory’s birth, Alice used research she had conducted with Vegapunk into the Lineage Factor to implant an artificial, Weather Fruit-like power in her. Drinking the vial Alice left behind awakens that power. Although its effects resemble a Devil Fruit ability, Lory is not described as a Devil Fruit user. She becomes known as the first Weather Controller; Ryan later calls her ability Sky Controller. 440 441 465
- Controls twelve weather-related powers. Those named include wind, rain, thunder, lightning, clouds, snow, frost, and mist. Twelve elemental orbs appear during her awakening before merging into her body. 441
- Uses her meteorological understanding to call forth different weather phenomena instinctively. Her first attempts at combat techniques are less assured: she needs more than a dozen tries to produce a Wind Blade. 441
- Can affect the surrounding temperature; frost forms when she angrily rejects the idea of meeting Vegapunk. 442
- Shields the Soaring Dragon from violent New World weather, allowing a journey that would ordinarily take several hours to finish in under one hour. 465
- Calms powerful winds during the crew’s search for Final Island. Her control greatly reduces weather hazards but cannot necessarily overcome nature at its most extreme, such as severe typhoons or tsunamis. 506
Power Progression
| Stage | Development |
|---|---|
| Early voyage | Joins Ryan for her navigational knowledge but has little combat strength. 8 |
| Technical aptitude recognized | Demonstrates that she can learn ship repair after observing it and becomes the crew’s shipwright; later operates its naval gun. 221 318 |
| Weather power awakened | Drinks Alice’s vial and awakens twelve weather-related powers implanted through Lineage Factor research. She can use them instinctively, though her combat technique remains undeveloped. 441 |
| Weather-assisted navigation | Uses the ability Ryan names Sky Controller to protect the Soaring Dragon from violent New World weather and greatly accelerate its passage. 465 |
| Final Island voyage | Calms raging winds around the ship, while acknowledging limits to how much extreme natural force she can counter. 506 |
Relationships
- Portgas D. Ryan — Captain and the person who rescued her from slavery. Lory joins his voyage as a navigator and becomes emotionally attached to him, often reacting jealously to Robin’s closeness with him. Ryan supports her quietly after she learns about her birth and respects her refusal to seek out Vegapunk. 8 27 43 441 442
- Nico Robin — Fellow crewmate and romantic rival in Lory’s eyes. Lory distrusts Robin at first, but the two work together to save Ryan, Shiki, and Indigo from Shiki’s collapsing island. 27 40
- Beli — Fellow crewmate. Beli is largely oblivious to Lory’s flirtatious exchanges with Ryan and trusts her enough to rely on her cooking and navigation. 8 16
- Haredas — Guardian whom Lory calls her grandfather. He welcomes Ryan’s crew, warns Ryan not to mistreat her, and, with Lia, honors Alice’s request to keep Lory’s origins secret. 37 43 440
- Lia — Guardian whom Lory calls her grandmother. She worries that Lory’s undisclosed background could endanger her if discovered and rejects the suggestion that Lory must share Alice’s tragic fate. 37 43 440
- Fujitora — Fellow crewmate whose attempt to pull Weatheria down is stopped by Lory’s warning about the island’s supporting bubble. He later notices the change in her aura after her power awakens. 37 443
- Alice — Lory’s mother, a Weatheria meteorological genius who died giving birth to her. Lory has conflicted feelings about the scientific purpose behind her conception and mourns never having known Alice, while accepting the weather power Alice left her. 440 441
- Vegapunk — Lory’s biological father and Alice’s former research partner. Having never known him as a parent, Lory refuses Ryan’s offer to help find him and says that Vegapunk is not her father. 439 440 442
- Grandmother on Karakuri Island — Lory’s biological grandmother, who recognizes her resemblance to Vegapunk and welcomes her warmly. They share an emotional farewell when Lory chooses to continue her voyage. 439 443 445
