Background

Ryan was born in 1504 of the Circular Calendar as the son of Portgas D. Force, the older brother of Portgas D. Rouge. His body is inhabited by a transmigrator from twenty-first-century Earth who retains knowledge of the One Piece world and recognizes Ace as his cousin. 1

The Marines tortured Ryan’s parents to death after they refused to disclose Rouge’s location. Force had sent the three-year-old Ryan to his friend Carter beforehand, allowing him to survive; Carter, a retired Marine, raised him in an orphanage on Baterilla. 1

At eight, Ryan awakened the Strongest Protagonist System and chose piracy as both a path to freedom and a means of avenging his parents. He concealed this ambition from Carter, claiming that he and Beli wanted training to prepare for Marine recruitment. 1

Carter brought Ryan and Beli to Scopper Gaban, who accepted them as apprentices after Ryan struck him with Kamusari. Gaban trained Ryan’s fundamentals for a year before arranging two additional years of swordsmanship, Haki, and Breathing Technique training under Silvers Rayleigh. 2 3 5 6
