Background

Ryan was eight years old in 1504 of the Circular Calendar. He is the son of Portgas D. Force, the older brother of Portgas D. Rouge. His body is inhabited by a transmigrator from twenty-first-century Earth who retains knowledge of the One Piece world and recognizes Ace as his cousin. 1

The Marines tortured Ryan’s parents to death after they refused to disclose Rouge’s location. Force had sent the three-year-old Ryan to his friend Carter beforehand, allowing him to survive; Carter, a retired Marine, raised him in an orphanage on Baterilla. Ryan later identifies Rear Admiral Bowen as the officer responsible for their deaths. 1 66

At eight, Ryan awakened the Strongest Protagonist System and chose piracy as both a path to freedom and a means of avenging his parents. He concealed this ambition from Carter, claiming that he and Beli wanted training to prepare for Marine recruitment. 1

Carter brought Ryan and Beli to Scopper Gaban, who accepted them as apprentices after Ryan struck him with Kamusari. Gaban trained Ryan’s fundamentals for a year before arranging two additional years of swordsmanship, Haki, and Breathing Technique training under Silvers Rayleigh. 2 3 5 6

Appearance

Ryan was initially a thin, black-haired eight-year-old in tattered black clothes, with freckles that he believed detracted from his future looks. 1 After two years of isolated training under Rayleigh, he had grown to nearly 170 centimeters, with uncut hair reaching almost to his waist and the bearing of a master. 6

Personality

Ryan begins as a cautious survivor. He understands that possessing Roger’s sword as a weak child could invite disaster, hides both Ace and his pirate ambitions, and keeps reserve attribute points as a safeguard rather than spending everything immediately. 1 3 4

He values freedom, exploration, food, drink, and companionship more than the title of Pirate King. He rejects being handed another person’s destiny, including Shanks’s implied invitation to inherit the straw hat, insisting that anything he wants should be taken through his own efforts. 1 3 5

Ryan is protective of companions and strongly opposed to slavery, freeing captives and taking responsibility for returning them safely. However, he is also calculating and ruthless toward enemies he considers dangerous, including pirates, traffickers, and the king of Goth Kingdom. 7 8 15

Despite his maturity and violence, Ryan is theatrical, vain, and fond of provoking powerful opponents. He enjoys dramatic entrances, named attacks, trash talk, and displays of swordsmanship, while often treating serious situations with humor. 6 12 32 33

As his ambitions expand, Ryan becomes concerned with what must replace oppressive institutions after they fall. He treats Goa Kingdom as a test of social reform, teaches younger allies principles such as equality and rule of law, and seeks ways to reform criminals he considers redeemable rather than kill them indiscriminately. Strongest Protagonist System

Ryan’s system grants attribute points from defeated or killed opponents, with kills providing double the value. Rewards diminish after repeatedly defeating the same target, while training and cultivation can also raise attributes. 1

On the way into the Grand Line, Ryan reaches the Swordmaster bottleneck and eventually undergoes a life-or-death clash with Hawkeye. Their later discussion lets both swordsmen break into the Great Swordsman realm, after which Ryan establishes his own sword path. 16 19 20

Alabasta and the Peak Challenge

Ryan enters Alabasta amid rumors concerning Yoru and Pluton. He recruits Fujitora, publicly establishes the “Traffic Light Trio” with Beli, Kid, and Killer, defeats multiple elite swordsmen, and claims Yoru before giving it to Mihawk on his own terms. 22 29 33 35 36

Weatheria and Golden Lion

While on Weatheria, Ryan maximizes much of his existing power but struggles with control. He confronts Golden Lion Shiki, defeats him without allowing him to die in the collapse of his floating island, then gains the Kukuku Fruit after the World Government raises his bounty to one billion Beli. 38 40 41

Water 7 and Mary Geoise

Ryan travels toward Water 7 to commission a ship and reunites with Buggy, who returns the valuables stolen from Ryan’s abandoned vessel. Later, Ryan infiltrates Mary Geoise with Buggy, reaches Imu’s chamber, provokes a reaction with the name “Joy Boy,” and escapes through a spatial portal after forcing a Five Elder into an agreement. 43 44 49

Ryan subsequently receives the Soaring Dragon from Tom. When a major Navy force attacks his companions at Water 7, he relies on Robin and Tesoro’s plan to use Charlos’s Celestial Dragon status rather than launch a direct assault against the hostages’ captors. 55 69

Ryan develops the Freedom Alliance while continuing to sail, agreeing to cooperate with Dragon’s Revolutionary Army without surrendering his independence. In the East Blue, he transforms Goa Kingdom into a testing ground for his political and educational ideas. Prolonged Sword Intent training gives him the Sword Body, while his instruction and later conversations with Ace complete his mission to change his cousin’s fate. Ryan’s crew gains strength and influence through further voyages, and Ryan works to refine his Haki rather than depend on raw power alone. Following the battle at Fish-Man Island, his bounty reaches 2.97 billion Beli and he is recognized as one of the Four Emperors. In the Hall of Heroes, Ryan finds inscriptions that lead him to suspect Joy Boy was a fellow transmigrator. He later recruits Siegel, whose Bewitching Fruit offers a possible means of changing violent factions after the World Government falls. Rescue of Carter and Gaban

After Carter and Gaban are captured, Ryan infiltrates Mary Geoise with Charlos and forcibly rescues Carter despite his guardian’s Marine loyalties.
