Background
Kizaru was formerly one of Zephyr’s students, but was also his least-favored pupil: Zephyr regarded him as lazy, arrogant, and excessively specialized. Their teacher-student relationship remains openly sarcastic, with Zephyr repeatedly warning Carl not to adopt Kizaru’s “crooked” philosophy. Despite the hostility, Kizaru reacts protectively when he believes Carl’s Holy Light may have harmed Zephyr 5 6.
When young, Kizaru used feigned injuries and similar evasive tactics to escape harsh training, particularly under Akainu. This shared dislike of pointless exertion makes him recognize Carl as a kindred spirit 10.
Appearance
Kizaru is a tall, thin man with naturally curly black hair and sunglasses. His reserved posture and pursed lips often accompany a deliberately slow, teasing manner of speech 5.
- Yellow-and-white striped suit
- Purple tie and dark-green shirt
- White leather shoes
- Frequently props his chin with one hand or lounges casually
- Often appears or departs as a flash of golden light 5 7
Personality
Kizaru projects a careless, languid personality: he clips his nails during recruit matches, tolerates Carl’s sleeping habits, and dismisses formal concerns with sarcasm or indifference 14 33. He particularly dislikes excessive or dull training, making him far more permissive of Carl’s slacking than Zephyr or Akainu 10.
Behind this casual facade, Kizaru is observant and politically shrewd. He immediately recognizes the strategic importance of Carl’s Holy Light, moves early to recruit him, and uses his authority to protect and facilitate Carl’s career 6 7 38. He also understands when restraint is necessary, ordering Carl to spare Whitey Bay rather than trigger a larger conflict with Whitebeard 42.
Abilities & Skills
Light-Based Logia Ability
Kizaru is a powerful Logia Devil Fruit user capable of transforming into photons and moving at extraordinary speed 3 7.
- Retrieved Carl’s dropped Holy Light Fruit and returned to his seat in less than a second 5.
- Travels as streaks of golden light or photons, allowing near-instant arrivals and departures 7 43.
- Uses his speed to harass opponents from range and evade heavy attacks 34 36.
- His extreme mobility made Kaido unable to effectively strike him in dragon form 34.
Yasakani no Magatama
Kizaru fires a barrage of light projectiles from the air.
- Bombarded Kaido repeatedly while exploiting the size of Kaido’s dragon form 34.
- Combined with Aokiji’s freezing attacks to pressure and exhaust Kaido 35.
- Can be used continuously at range while Kizaru remains difficult to hit 34.
Ama no Murakumo no Tsurugi
Kizaru forms a sword used for precise cutting.
- Used it to make an incision in Kaido’s arm so blood samples could be extracted for Vegapunk’s research 37.
Relationships
- Carl — His chosen adjutant and protégé. Kizaru recognized the military value of Holy Light, recruited Carl before graduation, provided housing, and later continued supporting Carl’s independent career 6 7 39 45.
- Zephyr — Former teacher. Their relationship is defined by sarcasm and mutual irritation; Zephyr considers Kizaru a corrupting influence on Carl 5 6 12.
- Akainu — Formerly subjected Kizaru to severe training, which contributed to Kizaru’s familiarity with Carl’s avoidance tactics 10.
- Aokiji — Fellow admiral. They coordinated against Kaido by alternating attacks and preserving their stamina 31 35 36.
- Sengoku — Fleet Admiral who allowed Carl to choose his future superior and later coordinated with Kizaru over Carl’s gradual independence 7 39.
- Pythagoras — Kizaru introduced Carl to Vegapunk’s clone and personally delivered Carl’s Raven Devil Fruit to the research facility 38.
- Marco — Opponent from the Whitebeard Pirates. Kizaru’s arrival forced Marco to abandon his attempt to defeat Carl and retreat with Whitey Bay 43.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Marine Training Camp
Kizaru unexpectedly appears at Zephyr’s training camp after sensing Carl’s new ability. He identifies the partially eaten Holy Light Fruit, witnesses its effects on Zephyr, and realizes that even a small enhancement noticeably strengthens an admiral 5 6.
He begins recruiting Carl immediately, arguing that a healer and enhancer would be highly coveted by Marine officers. After Carl promises to prioritize him after graduation, Kizaru gives Carl the keys to his former Marineford residence 7.
Recruitment of Carl
Kizaru exposes Carl’s exaggerated hospital injury because he used similar tricks in his youth. He offers Carl protection in exchange for becoming his adjutant, and Carl ultimately commits to serving under him over Akainu’s competing offer 10 15.
Kizaru gives Carl his personal Den Den Mushi number and promises assistance against opponents Carl cannot handle 15.
Kaido Capture Operation
Kizaru brings Carl to the G-2 Branch for Tsuru’s operation using Jack to lure Kaido into battle. He accepts Carl’s support role, receives Holy Light’s enhancement, and fights alongside Aokiji and the vice admirals 31 34.
During the battle, Kizaru uses speed and ranged attacks to wear down Kaido, rotates combat duties with Aokiji, and helps preserve the force’s stamina until Kaido is defeated 34 36. Afterward, he personally extracts Kaido’s blood for Vegapunk’s research 37.
Punk Hazard
Kizaru escorts Carl through the heavily secured Punk Hazard facility, warns him to be careful discussing the World Government, and introduces him to Pythagoras 37 38. Although he notices Carl inexplicably possesses a second Devil Fruit, he accepts Carl’s explanation and delivers the Raven Fruit for the ability-weapon project 38.
Carl's Independent Command
Sengoku assigns Kizaru and Carl a mission against the Butcher Pirates primarily to test Carl’s ability to operate independently. Kizaru recognizes that Carl is beginning to outgrow a passive adjutant role and confirms Sengoku’s plan to let him handle ordinary missions while remaining available for major operations 39.
When Carl clashes with Whitey Bay and Marco, Kizaru orders him not to kill Whitey Bay, then arrives in time to prevent Marco from finishing Carl. He allows Marco to retreat after Whitey Bay is recovered 42 43.
Kizaru later gives Carl the completed ability weapon Raven before Carl departs with his own warships and adjutant 45.
Trivia
- Kizaru’s former residence became Carl’s first house in Marineford 7.
- He uses a personal Den Den Mushi number as an emergency contact for Carl 15.
- His authority allows him to bypass Punk Hazard’s security procedures more easily than Carl can 38.
- He was visibly pleased when other officers experienced Holy Light’s enhancement, as he had already benefited from it himself 34.
