Overview

Amazon Lily is an isolated island nation inhabited by the Kuja, a society of women who call the island “Daughter Island.” Its residents are largely unfamiliar with men and the outside world, while many keep intelligent snakes as companions. The island lies within the Calm Belt and is protected by Sea Kings and the venomous Yuda. 1 2 16

The Kuja

The island’s inhabitants identify themselves as the Kuja, rather than “Amazon Lily.” Their isolation leaves many of them naïve about men, Devil Fruits, and the dangers of the wider world. 2 11 20

• Men are forbidden from entering the island, joining the Kuja Pirates, becoming Empress, or living permanently within its settlements. 3 13 14
• Lu Ge was initially housed outside the village because he was male, despite having brought news of the Boa sisters. 3

Empress Succession

Amazon Lily’s Empress is both its political leader and the figure traditionally capable of commanding the Yuda that pull the Kuja Pirate Ship. 2 3 16

• A candidate must gain the Yuda’s recognition; physical strength and Conqueror’s Haki are considered essential to making them submit. 3 16
• The death of Empress Toritoma left Amazon Lily without a ruler and unable to safely depart the Calm Belt. 2 33

Defenses and Transportation

Calm Belt and Sea Kings

Amazon Lily is surrounded by the Calm Belt, where Sea Kings make ordinary sea travel extremely dangerous. 2 18 19

• The island’s usual protection comes from the Yuda nesting near its waters, which deter surrounding Sea Kings. 16
• The Deep Sea King Manroba was powerful enough to resist Yuda venom and discharge electricity. 19
• Amazon Lily’s warriors are accustomed to the threat of Sea Kings and prepared to fight when one appears. 19

Yuda and the Kuja Pirate Ship

The Kuja Pirate Ship relies on two enormous Yuda to pull it through the Calm Belt. Without recognized Yuda, the ship cannot sail safely. 2 16

• More than a dozen Yuda inhabit the island’s waters; they are intelligent enough to communicate intent and judge potential masters. 16
• After Lu Ge released controlled Conqueror’s Haki, most nearby Yuda were knocked unconscious, while the two former Empress’s Yuda submitted in fear. 17
• Reharnessing those two Yuda restored the Kuja Pirate Ship after more than a year of inactivity. 17

History

Following the abduction of the Boa sisters and much of the Kuja Pirates’ force, Amazon Lily suffered a severe decline. Sanya describes the earlier attack as having captured many warriors and killed others; the surviving Empress later became ill and died, leaving the island leaderless. 2 10

Lu Ge arrived on the island badly wounded and was rescued by Cosmos and Stobi, who mistook him for a woman. Once his identity as a man was exposed, Sanya allowed him to remain temporarily outside the village because he had information concerning the missing Boa sisters. 1 3

A year later, the Lone Wolf Trading Company used Lago’s Door-Door Fruit to abduct eight Kuja from their homes. The company’s leader, Lone Wolf Ark, attempted to expand the raid into a full assault on Amazon Lily, treating its women as merchandise for the slave trade. 8 9 10

Although Sanya and the island’s warriors initially struggled against Ark, Lu Ge killed Ark and Lago, acquired the Door-Door Fruit, and personally freed the eight captives from the merchant ship. The victory made him a public hero and Amazon Lily’s “most important friend.” 12 13 14

With Lu Ge’s help, the Yuda submitted and the Kuja Pirate Ship sailed again. A selected expedition led by Sanya departed to locate Shakuyaku, restore Amazon Lily’s leadership, and seek the Boa sisters. 17 18
