History

Sengoku and Garp previously defeated Golden Lion Shiki after Shiki invaded Marine Headquarters in an attempt to rescue Gol D. Roger. Shiki was subsequently imprisoned in Impel Down, from which he later became the first known successful escapee. 20

During Lu Ge and Rayleigh's raid on Mary Geoise, Sengoku arrives with Garp, Zephyr, Aokiji, Akainu, and Kizaru after Lu Ge kills Celestial Dragons. He interrupts Lu Ge's attempted killing blow against Kizaru by attacking in his golden Buddha form. 37 41

After learning that Lu Ge is the swordsman who defeated Mihawk, Sengoku concludes that Lu Ge is too dangerous to leave alive and orders the assembled Marines to attack. Lu Ge repeatedly turns the Marines' attacks against them, including redirecting Akainu's Meigo into Sengoku's back and sending Garp crashing into him through a Dark Door. 42 44

Sengoku's confrontation with Lu Ge escalates when Lu Ge withstands his Conqueror's Haki-infused Buddha palm through physical strength alone. Sengoku later uses his enormous body to prevent Lu Ge from consuming Akainu's Devil Fruit, but is caught by the Revolving Door technique and severely wounded by the Heaven-Slicing Sword-Drawing Technique. 43 45 46

Following Lu Ge's escape and the Pacifistas' failed deployment, Sengoku reports the disaster to Saint Rosward. Though privately contemptuous of the Celestial Dragons' slavery system, he remains constrained by Marine hierarchy. After Kong is removed from office, the Five Elders approve Sengoku as the new Fleet Admiral. 49 50

Appearance

Sengoku can transform into a gigantic golden Buddha, possessing an immense body and oversized palms capable of covering the battlefield. 41 42

Personality

Sengoku is a disciplined battlefield commander who quickly recognizes threats and attempts to coordinate the Marines around them. He orders his allies to stop using reckless long-range attacks once Lu Ge begins redirecting them, and he authorizes Seastone as a countermeasure when direct combat fails. 42 47

Despite his position, he is privately critical of the Celestial Dragons. After learning that Lu Ge attacked Mary Geoise to rescue enslaved girls, Sengoku remarks that the World Nobles brought the disaster upon themselves. 49
