Background and History
Jotunheim is a dark, snowbound realm where Frost Giants thrive in the cold. Laufey once sought to conquer Earth and make it an Ice Age suitable for his people. Odin defeated the Frost Giants and took the Casket of Ancient Winters—the source of their power—to Asgard, leaving Jotunheim without it for roughly a thousand years 114 120 140.
After Odin weakened, Laufey led Frost Giants into an alliance with Fire Giants and Vanir forces against Asgard. Their army deployed Frost Giant Beasts and fought Asgard’s defenders and the Avengers. Rimuru destroyed many of their elite commanders; Laufey then recovered the Casket, greatly strengthening his forces and spreading winter across Asgard and Earth 129 134 136 139 140.
Rimuru defeated Laufey and consumed the Casket. Laufey’s dying will gave Rimuru a claim to Jotunheim’s throne, though bloodline nobles objected to an outsider ruling them. As king, Rimuru ordered surviving giants to help undo the damage to Asgard’s climate 155 158 164.
Appearance
Frost Giants vary considerably in size and strength, especially when empowered by the Casket of Ancient Winters 134 136 139.
- A three-meter-tall general is described as having an exceptionally rare noble bloodline 134.
- Laufey says the Casket could allow noble bloodlines to grow over ten meters tall; after its recovery, he becomes several stories tall 136 139.
- Their icy appearance prompts Tony Stark to nickname them “blueberries” 139.
Abilities and Skills
Frost Magic
Frost Giants wield cold through both spells and their bloodline power 135 178.
- They form sharp Ice Blades and Ice Spikes; a general’s freezing grip can frostbite an opponent and hinder even Thor 134 178.
- Their warlords can combine their magic into Ice Age, a large-scale spell designed by Laufey to reproduce the Casket’s environmental effects. Its use freezes the battlefield and injures nearby allies as well as enemies 135.
- Higher bloodline levels bring greater magical affinity and better adaptation to extreme cold 178.
Cold-Weather Warfare
- Frost Giants are strongest in Jotunheim’s frosty climate 135.
- Their Frost Giant Beasts are massive, heavily defended creatures that can scatter formations and exhale damaging icy winds 129 130.
- Jotunheim’s harsh climate makes the realm difficult for poorly equipped invaders to attack 178 222.
Equipment and Resources
- Casket of Ancient Winters — Jotunheim’s ancestral artifact and the source of the Frost Giants’ greatest power. It can alter a planet’s climate; Laufey uses it to freeze Asgard and threaten Earth 114 139 140 152.
- Enchanted vessels — Jotunheim’s people can reinforce timber with magic to build ships capable of travelling through space 178.
Relationships
- Laufey — their former king, who led the invasion of Asgard and recovered the Casket 120 129 139.
- Rimuru Tempest — defeated Laufey and became Jotunheim’s king. Rimuru later named giants, raising their bloodline levels 155 158 164 175.
- Asgardians — longstanding enemies; Odin defeated them in an earlier war, and they later besieged Asgard alongside other realms 114 129.
- Fire Giants and Vanir — wartime allies against Asgard. The Frost Giants’ large-scale ice attacks also harmed Fire Giants, and Laufey attempted to divert Rimuru toward their forces 129 134 135.
- Ymir — the Primordial Giant whom Jotunheim’s people claim as an ancestor. Ymir says Laufey imprisoned him and used his flesh to create Frost Giant warriors 164.
