Zhao Kai was scared out of his wits and turned to run.
"Trying to run? Too late!"
Molly's voice was icy. Gripping the Broken Sword, she pushed off with her feet and shot after him like a white bolt of lightning.
Her swordsmanship proficiency was already close to the fourth tier, and both her speed and strength far surpassed those of ordinary people.
Zhao Kai only saw a blur before a white figure blocked his path.
"Pfft!"
The Broken Sword sliced through the air and pierced Zhao Kai's heart with precision.
Zhao Kai's body jolted violently. He lowered his head to stare at the Broken Sword in his chest, his eyes filled with disbelief.
His mouth opened as if he wanted to say something, but he only coughed up a mouthful of blood before collapsing limply.
By coincidence, his corpse landed directly on the altar drawn in blood.
Molly panted heavily, the hand gripping the Broken Sword trembling slightly.
This was her first time killing someone.
Not a Monster Demon, but a living, breathing human being.
A powerful wave of nausea surged up, and she nearly vomited.
Just then, something bizarre happened.
After Zhao Kai's corpse fell onto the altar, the blood-red pattern on it suddenly lit up, releasing a dense cloud of black mist.
Then Zhao Kai's corpse rapidly shriveled before her eyes. His skin became like dead tree bark, while every drop of blood and trace of vital essence was completely absorbed by the altar.
In the end, only a desiccated corpse remained.
The blood-red pattern on the altar became even more vivid.
Molly watched in horror, a chill shooting from the soles of her feet straight to the top of her head.
This altar was far too bizarre!
She did not dare linger any longer. She hurriedly canceled her transformation and returned to her original appearance.
Looking at the two corpses on the ground, Molly's mind went blank.
She had killed someone.
She had killed someone.
Although Zhao Kai was a beast who deserved to die, she had still killed a person.
Panic and unease flooded over her like a tide.
What was she supposed to do?
Run?
No.
If she ran, she would become a murderer. The police would hunt her down, and she would never know peace for the rest of her life.
Besides, someone had to deal with that bizarre altar.
"Phew..."
Molly took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down, while trying to comfort herself as well:
"Killing is wrong, but I'm not a saint or Jesus, so whatever I do is right... Oh, even Jesus was once wrongly crucified and roasted, though in the end he received an epic-level boost from two Confuciuses and one Zhuangzi."
Friends who killed people often knew that killing was easy, but disposing of the body was hard.
So Molly did not choose to deal with the corpses, nor did she pretend she knew nothing and flee. Instead, she took out her phone, trembling as she dialed the police.
"Hello... Officer? I want to report a crime. I'm... I'm in XX Alley. I found two corpses, and an altar drawn in blood..."
She deliberately let a hint of sobbing enter her voice, but she still clearly explained the address and situation.
After hanging up, Molly's entire body trembled faintly.
She did not know what awaited her, but she knew she had done nothing wrong.
Before long, police sirens approached from the distance.
More than a dozen police cars stopped at the entrance to the alley. A group of officers rushed in and swiftly sealed off the scene.
Leading them was a middle-aged police officer. He walked up to Molly, looked at her Pale face, and asked in a deep voice:
"Did you call the police?"
"Y-Yes... I did." Molly nodded, her voice still trembling.
The officer sized her up, then looked at the two corpses and the bizarre altar on the ground, his brows tightly furrowed.
"Tell me. What did you see?"
Molly steadied herself and began to lie.
She said she had been passing through when she heard a commotion. When she came over to take a look, she found the two corpses and had immediately called the police in fright.
She did not mention that Zhao Kai had tried to assault her, nor that she had transformed into a magical girl and killed him. She only described the "facts" she had seen.
The officer looked at her with half-belief and half-suspicion, but did not question her further.
Just then, several men in black suits walked over.
There was something unusual about their bearing. They carried a faint, oppressive presence wholly unlike that of ordinary police officers.
The man at the front walked up to Molly, took out a gray stone, and held it before her.
"This is a Miasma-Detecting Stone."
The man's voice was flat.
"Put your hand on it."
Molly froze for a moment, unsure what he meant, but she did as he said.
The instant her hand touched the stone, it flickered and emitted a faint white glow.
Seeing this, the man nodded and said something to the police officer beside him.
After listening, the officer's gaze toward Molly softened considerably.
"All right, you may leave. If we need your cooperation with the investigation later, we'll contact you again."
Molly blinked.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
The man nodded and added:
"The Miasma-Detecting Stone detected no Miasma contamination on you. You should have nothing to do with this incident."
Miasma?
Molly's heart was full of questions.
What was that?
She wanted to ask, but seeing the man's distant, unapproachable expression, she ultimately swallowed her words.
She stood up and glanced at the corpses on the ground and the bizarre altar, her heart filled with conflicting emotions.
She turned and walked out of the alley. Sunlight fell over her body, yet she could not feel the slightest warmth.
What had happened today was simply too bizarre, too terrifying.
That strange altar, Zhao Kai being drained into a dried corpse, that mysterious man, and the Miasma he had mentioned...
It all felt like an enormous mystery hanging over her heart.
