At a training ground in Konoha, Minato was training with two companions.
All three were Jiraiya's disciples. The other two came from prominent families, but there was a clear gap between their talent and Minato's.
Their abilities had already diverged noticeably. It was only a matter of time before they were in different leagues altogether.
A figure suddenly appeared in a great tree beside the training ground. Minato and his companions looked up.
They recognized him at once: Uchiha Jin of the Uchiha clan. Jin had recently taken over the Security Force from Fugaku, and he had become a household name in Konoha.
"Jin, what brings you here?" Minato could tell at a glance that Uchiha Jin had come for him.
Jin smiled. "The village is holding a competition between its departments in a few days. Ninja from the regular forces can sign up freely. I came to pass along the news.
"It's a great chance to gain combat experience and face Ninja from every department in Konoha, including some strong opponents. It could help all of you improve."
The three looked surprised. They had never expected a competition like this.
Jin took in their reactions, then turned and left them to discuss it.
"Minato, are you going to enter?"
Minato nodded. "I am. It's a good opportunity."
"Do you think Jiraiya will enter?" one of his companions asked.
Minato and their other companion both laughed.
"Jiraiya's already famous throughout the Shinobi World," Minato said. "He doesn't need to enter a competition at this level. I doubt Konoha's Elite Jonin will take part either."
"That's a relief. With our skills, we're bound to place well and make a name for ourselves throughout Konoha."
