Geography and Population

• Konoha stands on a plain in the fertile Land of Fire. Its location makes it accessible to merchants, but also a target for rival great nations 91 634.
• Major clans occupy districts toward the village’s outskirts, giving civilians nearer the center time to evacuate during an attack. Yamanaka sensory ninja help detect infiltrators in Area One 43.
• The Uchiha live in a designated district at a corner of the village. They were relocated there after Madara Uchiha’s departure and conflict with the First Hokage 1.
• Konoha’s population grew from fewer than 30,000 at its founding to more than 100,000 as civilians settled in the village 385. Later growth left hundreds of thousands living in a single village 775.

Government and Security

• The Hokage leads Konoha. During the Third Hokage’s tenure, Homura, Koharu, and Danzō serve as advisors, while an Elders Council of veteran shinobi carries prestige but has limited direct executive power 24.
• The Hokage commands ANBU. Danzō’s Root operates as a separate covert force that answers to him 24 112.
• The Uchiha-run Security Force patrols the village, investigates threats, and maintains population records. Its patrols caught spies and saboteurs during a period of heightened vigilance 35 561.
• Fugaku’s approved Security Force reorganization divides its work among Patrol, Interrogation, Intelligence, Logistics, Combat, and Household Registration. The proposed staff is 400, with a maximum of 600 as the clan grows 561 563.
• Konoha depends on support from the Land of Fire’s Capital. Its leaders treat relations with the Daimyo as essential to village funding and stability 305 308.

History

Wars and attacks

Konoha repeatedly sends forces to the Land of Rain as fighting involving Sunagakure and Iwagakure intensifies. After enemy attacks destroy two Konoha bases, the Third Hokage mobilizes the major clans and regular forces to reinforce the front 160.

A coordinated attack then strikes Konoha itself. The One-Tail and Five-Tails devastate the village; more than 300 ninja die, over 1,000 are wounded, and nearly 3,000 villagers are killed or injured. About half its buildings are destroyed 161 166 189. When the Stone–Sand alliance withdraws, returning shinobi are greeted with cheers alongside the bodies of the war dead 226.

Kumogakure later sends 3,000 shinobi into Konoha. The defenders evacuate civilians and conceal sealing arrays and explosive tags throughout the village, sacrificing buildings to trap the invading force 369. Mito Uzumaki uses the Nine-Tails’ power against the attackers, and the village begins arranging shelter and cleanup after they retreat 374.

Recovery and expansion

• After wartime losses, Konoha adopts stricter training standards and considers a reserve force for Academy graduates who need further development 226 424.
• The Uchiha’s kindergarten proposal prompts other great families to plan their own facilities; Konoha plans four public kindergartens 423 425.
• Following later victories and treaties, the Land of Fire’s Capital increases Konoha’s funding, and the village plans another expansion 715.
• With about 7,000 regular ninja—and 9,000 across all departments—Konoha faces the unfamiliar problem of sustaining a growing force in peacetime 717. Fugaku proposes garrisons in smaller nations to take local missions, earn fees, and provide early warning of threats 718.
• Orochimaru later prepares to step down as Hokage and names Minato as his intended successor. No one registers to oppose Minato 800.

• Hokage Building — Houses the Hokage’s office, meeting rooms, administrative staff, intelligence records, and a sealed collection of ninjutsu materials 70.
• Uchiha District — Residential district containing clan businesses and Naka Shrine. Its back mountain is used for training and later falls within the expanded district 1 230 715.
• Naka Shrine — Site of Uchiha rites and secret meetings; a concealed passage leads to the clan’s stone tablet and historical scrolls 230.
