Background / History

Root is a secretive, dark organization founded and led by Shimura Danzō to operate in the shadows, eliminate threats, and weed out disloyal elements within Konoha 24 111. Originally established to assist the Third Hokage and train ANBU, Root eventually evolved into Danzō's private instrument for accumulating power, political elimination, and covert operations 24 111. Members of Root are subjected to severe psychological conditioning, bound by the Tongue-Cutting Root Severing Technique, and stripped of their names and families to ensure absolute obedience 386 394.

Throughout its existence, Root engaged in extrajudicial assassinations—such as the murders of Elder Yamada and Elder Yamamoto—and orchestrated regional political manipulations to provoke wars or centralize authority 6. Danzō also utilized Root to conduct illicit human experimentation using First-Generation (Hashirama) Senju cells, capturing civilians and operating secret training bases across foreign lands like the Land of Rain and Land of the Moon 112 394.

Root's operations frequently brought it into direct conflict with the Uchiha clan and Fugaku Uchiha. Following a series of framed operations, assassinations targeting Elder Ito, and public exposure of its mass graves and human experiments, Danzo was stripped of his authority 133 142 418. Root was temporarily folded into ANBU before being formally abolished by a Jonin Meeting vote, its Cursed Seals removed, and its surviving operatives gradually reintegrated into regular ninja life 142 420. Later, a remnants faction was briefly reconstituted in secret under Fugaku's disguised control 447.
