Power Progression

The Sharingan develops through tomoe stages, followed by the Mangekyō Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Fugaku’s eyes later evolve into the Rinnegan 42 475 692. The entries below record observed stages and advancements; they do not describe a single wielder’s progression.

Background

The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s inherited ocular ability. Its ordinary form progresses from one to three tomoe; the Mangekyō and Eternal Mangekyō are much rarer stages. Fugaku identifies the Rinnegan as a further evolution, brought about by the union of Yin and Yang powers 42 475 692.

Awakening and advancement can accompany intense emotion. Fugaku deliberately uses traumatic genjutsu to help several clan members develop their eyes, but later stops inducing Mangekyō awakenings in others because the process can change a person’s character and cannot be guaranteed to work 66 116 471 509 619. Shisui, by contrast, awakens his Mangekyō during an ordinary spar without Fugaku’s intervention 789 790.

Appearance

Activated ordinary Sharingan are crimson, with up to three rotating tomoe. Mangekyō patterns vary by wielder; Fugaku’s original pattern resembles a three-bladed windmill, while Shisui’s forms a four-pointed shape 3 475 789.

• Fugaku’s Eternal Mangekyō has rounded blade tips and a thicker frame than his original pattern 475.
• His evolved Rinnegan are pale purple with concentric ripples 692.
• His later Rinne Sharingan appears as a red eye on his forehead 770.

Abilities & Skills

Perception

The Sharingan improves sight and the ability to follow movement. Fugaku can navigate clearly at night with three tomoe; his Mangekyō makes moving objects’ paths clearer still 3 58.

• During a barrage of concealed weapons, Fugaku pushes his Sharingan to its limit to track and deflect them 52.
• Enhanced perception does not ensure a wielder can react quickly enough: Sanada says he can follow the Third Raikage’s movements but often cannot respond in time 584.

Genjutsu

Sharingan genjutsu can disrupt opponents, create convincing experiences, and aid interrogation 4 42 472.

• Fugaku plants a concealed false memory in a sleeping civilian and uses illusions to provoke Sharingan awakenings in clan members 42 66 509.
• Uchiha interrogators extract results from captured Cloud shinobi in under half an hour; Yamanaka Keichi identifies genjutsu as the likely means 472.
• Fugaku notes that constructing an illusory world through his Three-Tomoe Sharingan still takes considerable time, even after his Pupil Power improves 76.

Mangekyō abilities

Individual Mangekyō powers differ. Fugaku tells Jin that each eye can reveal its own ability, while using both eyes together enables Susanoo 510. The following abilities and associated Susanoo colors are catalogued in the novel 658:

• Fugaku’s Amaterasu produces black flames at the point of his gaze. In his first test, he extinguishes them by cutting off the chakra and Pupil Power sustaining them 58.
• Fugaku’s Black Mist Invisibility makes him and anything covered by the mist transparent for up to five minutes. He remains physically present and vulnerable if located; attacking while hidden uses the mist faster 58.
• Kenichi’s Kamui Space lets him become intangible and move through a separate dimension, which he uses to abduct an enemy scout and later hold the Fourth Raikage captive 656 696.
• Takigawa’s short-range travel moves him through space without a Flying Thunder God formula, but cannot cover the same distances 647.

Susanoo and Transcription Seal

Using both Mangekyō eyes, Fugaku forms a towering black samurai-shaped Susanoo. Its tomoe projectiles blast the ground, while its sword—made from his chakra and Pupil Power—slashes and cleaves 58.

• Susanoo rapidly drains Fugaku’s chakra, stamina, and Pupil Power during his first test and causes his eyes to bleed 58.
• The Transcription Seal can place a specified Pupil Power in the user’s eyes or another person’s, set to activate after a time or under particular conditions. A clan scroll describes it as a technique available after Mangekyō awakening 39.

Costs and further evolution

Ordinary tomoe-stage Sharingan can replenish the modest Pupil Power they consume. Mangekyō techniques, however, consume Pupil Power the eyes cannot restore on their own, eventually risking blindness or bodily collapse 58 89.

• Fugaku explains the Eternal Mangekyō as a fusion of complementary Mangekyō eyes that closes this loss and greatly increases Pupil Power. His own fusion uses eyes developed from cultivated bodies 194 475.
• White Zetsu or First-Generation Cells can lessen Mangekyō drawbacks, but Fugaku says they cannot by themselves turn an incomplete Mangekyō into the Eternal Eye 475 619.
• Fugaku’s Rinnegan awakening follows the convergence of Yin and Yang powers after he introduces Hashirama Cells. He describes the Rinnegan as restoring the emotional balance affected by the Mangekyō 488 692.

• Fugaku’s experience of advancing a transplanted pair from one to three tomoe is his first firsthand experience of the early stages: he already possessed three tomoe when he arrived in this world 474.
• A month-old Itachi briefly activates one tomoe, while Obito’s first activation produces two 716 721.
