Ch. 161Attack
Key plot points and events
- The Third Hokage announces that Konoha must send reinforcements to the Land of Rain after a serious defeat there. The assembled clans have only two hours to prepare and head for the village gate.
- Uchiha Tenjo orders his son, Fugaku, to remain in Konoha and protect the Uchiha District while many clan leaders depart. Fugaku agrees, aware that the Uchiha may face trouble from Konoha’s other power brokers.
- Disguised Sunagakure and Iwagakure ninja prepare to attack Konoha. Their goal is to delay the village’s reinforcements and buy time for their allied forces in the Land of Rain.
- As Konoha’s forces gather, the infiltrators drop their disguises and bombard the village with explosive-tag kunai. The blasts destroy buildings, endanger civilians, and throw the streets into chaos.
- Tenjo directs the Uchiha Security Force to evacuate civilians before assessing and confronting the attackers. Fugaku recognizes that the assault is likely part of a coordinated plan to trap Konoha’s reinforcements.
- The Third Hokage and the Elders arrive at the attack site. Hiruzen realizes that Konoha’s intelligence failures have left him reacting to events after they happen, strengthening his view that Root’s spy network must be restored.
- Danzo watches the attack and sees it as a chance to prove his value to Hiruzen; he then leaves to act.
- Two enormous Tailed Beasts appear amid the destruction, stunning the Konoha defenders. One is Shukaku, the One-Tail; the other is a five-tailed beast. A Konoha ninja despairs that the village cannot defeat them.
