Background / History

Su Wu was once renowned as the Medicine King. He treated poisoned and wounded soul-beast hunters, but disappeared from public view after Tang Hao and Tang Xiao crippled him when he discovered Ah Yin’s identity. Living in Jiangshui Village as Medicine Elder, he raised Jiang Baiyu and taught him herbal medicine while keeping his own identity hidden 1 2.

After Baiyu awakened the Shennong Cauldron, Su Wu revealed his identity and his feud with the Clear Sky Sect. He and Jiang Zheng reported Tang Hao’s location to Spirit Hall, taking care to keep the nearby villagers out of danger. Baiyu subsequently healed Su Wu’s longstanding injuries, allowing him to resume his cultivation 2 3 4.

Su Wu later took Zhu Zhuqing as a disciple. In Heaven Dou City, he learned that Ye Suxin—an old friend and fellow healer for whom he had once had feelings—had died. When her granddaughter Ye Lingling described the Rose Family’s hold over her family, he left to confront them 12 15 40.

Appearance

Su Wu’s injuries initially left him with broken legs and a frail aura. Healing restored his strength; his breakthrough to Titled Douluo made him appear younger still 1 4 38.

• His white hair turned black and his back straightened after his Titled Douluo breakthrough 38.
• His evolved martial soul appears as a slender, nine-jointed bamboo staff with translucent jade-green light 19.

Personality

Su Wu is protective of his family and the people around him. He concealed his whereabouts partly because his enemies could endanger Jiangshui Village, and he warned Baiyu to hide his coveted External Soul Bone until he could defend himself. He also shields Baiyu during dangerous encounters, even against stronger opponents 2 6 8.

He shares an affectionate, teasing relationship with Baiyu, but takes his responsibilities as a teacher seriously. His rules for Zhu Zhuqing forbid killing innocents without cause, require care for living things, and prohibit disciples from fighting one another to the death 5 7 12.

Medicinal arts

Jade-Green Nine-Jointed Bamboo

• His original Nine-Jointed Bamboo evolved after Baiyu healed him. Su Wu identifies its evolved form as a control-type martial soul with powerful vitality 4 19.
• Its plant-aligned Soul Power can probe for hidden presences and drive off weaker soul beasts. Su Wu can also use it to heal damage to nearby trees 6 50.

Protection and support

• Conceals his and Baiyu’s presence with plant-aligned Soul Power and shields Baiyu from hostile pressure 6.
• Lends Soul Power to Baiyu for difficult pill refinement and helps stabilize Dugu Bo’s Soul Core formation 33.

Relationships

• Jiang Baiyu — The grandson he raised and his student. Baiyu heals his injuries; Su Wu guides and protects him throughout his cultivation 1 3 4 8.
• Zhu Zhuqing — Disciple whom he accepts after helping rescue her from pursuers 11 12.
• Jiang Zheng — Spirit Hall elder and longtime acquaintance who helped care for Su Wu and Baiyu in Jiangshui Village 2 14.
• Ye Suxin — Late friend and fellow healer; their youthful affection never became a lasting relationship 15 40.
• Ye Lingling — Ye Suxin’s granddaughter. Su Wu treats her warmly and acts when he learns of the Rose Family’s designs on her family 40.
• Dugu Bo — Ally in Baiyu’s treatment of Dugu Bo’s poison and later in the group’s soul-ring hunts 33 38 46.

Trivia

• An auction house sold Su Wu’s handwritten medical notes as relics of the presumed-dead Medicine King. He could not publicly correct the claim without exposing himself 16.
