Artoria had previously participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War, where she formed a deep friendship with Irisviel von Einzbern despite repeatedly clashing with Irisviel's husband, Kiritsugu Emiya. This connection makes her immediately recognize and sympathize with Irisviel's daughter, Illya. 38

Shirou Emiya summons Artoria as Fuyuki's seventh Servant using a Command Spell acquired from Kirei Kotomine. Mordred recognizes her at once as King Arthur, and their initial collision destroys the Emiya residence. 27 Their subsequent duel leaves Artoria at a disadvantage without her Noble Phantasm, though she refuses Mordred's view that sheer strength defines a king. 36

Illya later persuades Shirou to transfer Artoria's contract and Command Spells to her. After Illya collapses from the magical burden, Artoria helps her recover, voluntarily severing the mana supply to avoid worsening her condition, and vows to protect her and help her win the Holy Grail. 39 40
