Manager Liu understood what Shen Wan was implying. "Thank you, Mrs. Xie."
She wasn't taking her anger out on them, but she wasn't satisfied with how the matter had been handled.
Now that he knew what their guest wanted, he could act on it. Manager Liu left the Xie Residence with the staff.
Xie Chengyue hadn't said a word throughout. He had left the decision to Shen Wan.
When he got home, he hadn't caught the conversation between the manager and the sales associates. But the manager had clearly looked guilty. After Xie Chengyue asked a few careful questions, the man told him everything.
Xie Chengyue hadn't concealed the matter or handled it himself. Instead, he had left it to Shen Wan.
"Shall we get back to arranging the flowers?" Shen Wan said with a smile. Her expression was as calm as ever; she seemed completely unaffected.
"I'll help," Xie Chengyue said.
Butler Lin volunteered, "Miss Baili, shall we go get the vases together?"
Shen Baili glanced at her mother. Shen Wan smiled and waved her off. "Go on. I'll trim the stems first."
"Helper, come give me a hand."
Xie Chengyue rolled up his sleeves. "What should I do?"
Shen Wan showed him how to trim the stems, guiding him through it step by step. He caught on quickly and held up his work for her to see. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "Teacher Shen, how did your student do?"
Shen Wan glanced at the stems he'd trimmed. "Very well. Keep it up."
Praised by his "teacher," Xie Chengyue worked even faster.
"I'm sorry," he said suddenly.
Shen Wan paused, then realized he was apologizing for the malice she had faced after marrying into the Xie Family.
Her feelings were complicated. She gathered a small bunch of trimmed flowers and handed it to him. "Didn't you stand up for me?"
"That made me happy."
They needed no more words. They understood each other.
"Aren't these the ones I just trimmed?"
Despite what he said, he readily took the hydrangeas.
"This bunch is going in our bedroom."
By the time Butler Lin and Shen Baili returned to the living room with the vases, all the stems had been trimmed.
The three of them arranged the flowers to their own tastes and filled five vases in all.
Four went into the bedrooms, and one stayed in the living room.
"There's a charity auction at the end of this month," Xie Chengyue said. "You two can come with me."
Shen Wan nodded. "All right. Is there anything we should know?"
Shen Baili nodded too.
In the two months since Shen Wan had married into the wealthy Xie Family, they had attended two banquets, but never an auction.
"Nothing in particular," Xie Chengyue said. "Just go and enjoy yourselves."
A black SUV sped down the road. Manager Liu was driving, with the younger and older sales associates in the back and another staff member in the front passenger seat.
Everyone else was in a foul mood. The person responsible seemed perfectly relaxed.
The older sales associate thought the matter had been settled perfectly. She scoffed at Mrs. Xie for being a pushover.
Even with someone backing her up, Mrs. Xie hadn't known to make trouble for them.
Maybe powerful men liked women like that—soft, docile, and harmless, without ambitions of their own.
A woman with such a dull personality might be cast aside before long. Then she would become a laughingstock.
The older associate looked forward to that day. She would have a good laugh at both of them. The thought made her laugh aloud.
Everyone else in the car: "..."
Manager Liu was speechless. He had lost count of how many times that had happened today. Did this idiot think she wouldn't be held responsible? Or did she think the deputy store manager would protect her?
Had she any idea how badly she'd messed up? The deputy store manager could barely protect herself...
Manager Liu had no sympathy to spare and couldn't be bothered with her. After today, he would never have to work with that idiot again.
The younger sales associate closed her eyes and pretended to nap. She had been right all along: Mrs. Xie was beautiful and kind, but she had principles and knew where to draw the line. There was an edge to her kindness.
Ahhh! She was officially Mrs. Xie's biggest fan. And Mrs. Xie was so sweet with her husband! She was completely invested in their wealthy-family love story.
She still had a tough fight ahead of her today and needed to gather her strength. Sometimes she was amazed by how oblivious her senior colleague was.
Even with her limited life experience, she could tell how serious this incident was for the brand.
Mrs. Xie hadn't held her or Manager Liu responsible, but she hadn't forgiven her senior colleague. Ahhh!
It wasn't over yet. Manager Liu had already reported the matter, and they had to meet tonight and reach a decision.
She stole a glance to her side. Her senior colleague had fallen asleep.
In the rearview mirror, she saw Manager Liu roll his eyes dramatically.
The corporate drone who had only recently entered the workforce had suffered yet another
workplace
blow.
She still had so much to learn.
In late July, on the day of the auction, the personal assistant arrived at the villa early with the styling team.
The auction wasn't an evening gala, so formal gowns weren't required. That gave the stylists more room to work.
Shen Wan respected the stylist's opinions, though she offered suggestions of her own when appropriate. Her ideas often provided the finishing
touch
that made the whole look come together.
Shen Baili knew her mother had always had a gift for design and a keen eye for color.
When she was little, her mother had made many of her clothes by hand. They had been beautiful.
After several hours of work, Shen Wan and Shen Baili went from beautiful women to beautiful women with an air of unmistakable elegance.
Both had striking features and exceptional poise. They looked lovely with or without styling, just in different ways.
Men's styling was simpler than women's. Xie Chengyue was already ready, so when he saw they were still busy, he returned to the study to deal with some documents.
An hour later, the three of them left home on time for the auction.
Inside the auction venue, they saw Manager Liu and the young sales associate, Song Huan, again. The two were following a middle-aged foreign woman.
"Chairman Xie, Mrs. Xie, Miss Baili. Good afternoon!" Manager Liu greeted them warmly.
Shen Wan knew why he had come. "Good afternoon."
Manager Liu made the introductions. "This is Ms. Kevin, VE's head of the Asia-Pacific region."
