"Thank you, big brother," Shen Baili said.

The living room fell quiet. She ventured, "Big brother, you seem tired lately. Has work been too busy?"

Xie Zhiyu said, "It has, but I still have time to help with problems."

He glanced at the time. "Do you have homework?"

Shen Baili blinked. "Huh? Yes."

In the study, Shen Baili sat as straight as an elementary school student, working through chemistry problems that made her head spin. Not far away, the stern-faced business tycoon Xie Zhiyu was studying a chemistry textbook.

How on earth had things come to this?

Her distraction caught Xie Zhiyu's attention. "Which problem are you stuck on?"

Shen Baili pointed blankly at her workbook. Xie Zhiyu thought for a few seconds, picked up a pen, and began explaining.

She pinched her thigh to pull her wandering attention back, then listened closely.

Give her two more chemistry papers. She felt unstoppable.

"Do you understand?" Xie Zhiyu asked after finishing another long problem.

Shen Baili nodded. "I do."

Xie Zhiyu took a sip of water. "You're very smart."

Her grasp of the material and attitude toward learning made teaching her rewarding. Unlike Xie Tingsi, who could fidget eight hundred times in five minutes of study.

Shen Baili smiled shyly. "Big brother, what about this one?"

She had plunged into a sea of knowledge and couldn't tear herself away.

She had never imagined chemistry could one day feel so simple.

Time slipped by unnoticed. Xie Zhiyu's tutoring session ended at nine thirty. He now had a clearer picture of Shen Baili's chemistry foundation and a more specific idea of what to look for in a tutor.

After helping Shen Baili with chemistry, Xie Zhiyu felt his taut nerves ease.

"Get some rest."

"The chemistry tutor will be here by next week at the latest," Xie Zhiyu added.

"Okay. Thank you for all your help, big brother." Shen Baili was grateful. Gritting her teeth, she said, "Big brother, I have something for you."

Xie Zhiyu watched her pull a... very thick book from her schoolbag. A closer look revealed the title: Wuthering Heights.

"It's an epic story about love and hate, betrayal and

revenge.

Our language arts teacher recommended it. I... I thought it was pretty good, so... so I wanted to share it with you."

Shen Baili put particular emphasis on "betrayal." Giving him the book was the best way she could think of to warn him.

Xie Zhiyu raised an eyebrow. "Love and hate? And... betrayal?"

"Betrayal?" Xie Zhiyu opened the book and skimmed its entire synopsis.

"It sounds interesting." He raised his brows and said gently, "I'll read it carefully. Thank you."

"It's late. Go to bed. You have school tomorrow."

Shen Baili said, "O-okay. Good night, big brother."

"Good night."

Back in her bedroom, Shen Baili tossed and turned. "System, do you think Xie Zhiyu understood my hint?"

Before the system could answer, she came up with her own conclusion. "Of course he didn't. He's just interested in the book."

"Maybe he only took it to spare my feelings."

After spending time with him these past few days, Shen Baili knew how deeply ingrained Xie Zhiyu's gentlemanly nature was.

"It's not like I can march up to him and say his fiancée is cheating on him and helping his rival bring him down..."

Shen Baili wrapped herself in the blanket like a cocoon, then wriggled back out.

Thunder cracked across the sky. After the deafening boom, rain came pouring down, bringing a little relief from the summer heat.

It rained through the night, with no sign of stopping by morning.

As Shen Baili stepped out of the villa, a black Maybach stopped in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Xie Zhiyu's sharply defined profile.

"What happened?" he asked.

Shen Baili hadn't expected him to ask. She explained the situation in a few sentences.

"Get in. I'll take you," Xie Zhiyu said.

Shen Baili was delighted. "Thank you, big brother!"

Just as she was about to go around to the other side of the car, Xie Zhiyu opened the door first.
