"Both schools are excellent. Is there one you prefer?"
The two schools offered very different paths, and Xie Chengyue had left the choice to Shen Baili and Shen Wan.
Even if Shen Baili hadn't done well on the exam, she could enroll in whichever school she chose.
Absolute fairness didn't exist. Assistant Li knew that well, and to be honest, he was a little envious.
He was also curious. What would the girl, newly arrived in a wealthy family, choose?
The Big Shot Comes Home.
Would she choose Haicheng No. 1 High School, with its strong faculty and demanding academics? Or Nanya International High School, with its elite education and preparation for studying abroad?
She had to choose one or the other.
Both were top high schools, each with its own strengths and priorities.
Shen Wan carefully read the descriptions of both schools. Rather than decide for her daughter, she looked at Shen Baili and left the choice to her.
Whatever Shen Baili decided, Shen Wan would support her wholeheartedly.
It was her life. She ought to decide for herself.
Shen Baili understood what Shen Wan meant from a single glance. She didn't need long to think.
"I'll go to Haicheng No. 1 High School."
There was no need to hesitate. It had been her goal from the start.
Assistant Li was surprised. He had expected her to choose Nanya International High School.
However he compared them, the latter seemed to offer a smooth road straight to a promising future. While studying there, she could befriend children from rich and powerful families and build connections.
In Assistant Li's view, making connections with the powerful and establishing a place in their circle was exactly what Shen Wan, who had married into a wealthy family, and Shen Baili, the daughter she'd brought with her, urgently needed.
Those were only his private thoughts. He wasn't foolish enough to say them aloud. They weren't close, and speaking up would do him no good.
He simply thought ordinary people lacked vision. The little girl's innocent pride was almost laughable.
Shen Baili had weighed her options. Her ability to get into Haicheng No. 1 High School proved she could study well. Money and other external things could be lost, but what she learned and the skills she gained would remain hers. No one could take them away.
As for making friends with classmates from powerful families—hah. When was it ever that simple?
Relationships were, at heart, an exchange of value. In the eyes of those rich kids, what did she have that made her worth knowing besides her status as the Xie Family's stepdaughter?
Their upbringing and everything they'd seen since childhood would only make them more pragmatic.
She would rather spend that time making herself stronger.
Shen Baili's head was clear. Her sudden wealth hadn't dazzled her.
In the original novel, "Shen Baili" hadn't gotten into Haicheng No. 1 High School and had gone straight to Nanya International High School. No one at that school for the wealthy had bullied her, but no one had paid her any attention either. She hadn't fit in, and her mistakes had drawn plenty of laughter.
At fifteen, "Shen Baili" had been painfully sensitive and proud. She hadn't wanted to add to her already overwhelmed mother's worries, so she'd said nothing and endured the entire school's cold shoulder alone. Her already troubled state of mind had gradually twisted, growing worse with time.
In the end, "Shen Baili" had done poorly on the college entrance exam and refused to attend university abroad. A large sum of money had eventually secured her a place at an elite private university in China.
Shen Baili had another theory: the lingering obsession was very likely connected to her studies.
Over the past few days, she'd repeatedly considered everything she knew and compared reality with the original plot, finding plenty of clues and forming several theories.
The release of her entrance exam results had lent further support to her theory.
The system's awakening couldn't have been a coincidence. What had woken it?
It could only draw energy from her. Perhaps she had fulfilled part of the lingering obsession and charged the system.
She tried to recall her past life, comparing what had happened with the original novel's plot, and found a possible answer.
Was it because she'd changed the original plot by getting into Haicheng No. 1 High School on her own merits?
Or because she hadn't missed the entrance exam and had successfully completed it?
Maybe it was both.
Once she tested her theory again, she would know for sure.
Assistant Li was a professional. After going over the details and a few requirements with Shen Wan and Shen Baili, he prepared to leave.
"Of course. I'll take care of everything."
Assistant Li had completed his previous assignment and received a new one.
The day had gone more smoothly than he'd expected. He could go home early.
The thought put a spring in his step as he left. If only every workday could be this easy.
Then he thought of Assistant Wang, who was always run ragged dealing with his boss's petty family troubles, on call twenty hours a day for an entire month to clean up messes. He shuddered.
Please, no family drama in the boss's house. I don't want to work overtime. What's the point of having money if I work myself to death? I'm not built as tough as Assistant Wang next door.
Shen Baili held out the bank card to her mother, but Shen Wan didn't take it. "Keep your allowance. Buy yourself whatever you want."
Shen Wan knew her daughter wouldn't spend recklessly.
Both she and her daughter would have to adjust to life with the Xie Family. They had a lot to learn.
Unlike Shen Baili, Shen Wan had known from the beginning that Xie Chengyue was no ordinary man. She had thought long and hard before deciding to remarry.
Shen Baili put the bank card away and opened the gift box on the coffee table. Inside was a beautiful white watch, small and elegant. The team of assistants had clearly picked it out with care.
"Try it on. You'll need a watch for school," Shen Wan said approvingly. "That was thoughtful of them."
Shen Baili first checked the watch's basic functions. Its face was clear and easy to read, and she was pleased. Then she put it on and turned her wrist. "Does it look nice?"
"It does," Shen Wan said. "It makes your hand look so fair and slender."
"Is it comfortable?"
"The size is just right, and it's very light," Shen Baili said.
"I'll take good care of it."
Seeing that she liked it, Shen Wan asked, "Then you'll wear it?"
"Mm-hmm," Shen Baili said.
She quite liked the watch.
