Background and History

Ma Hongjun comes from a poor family of tenant farmers and has several siblings. He enters Shrek Academy with a powerful but unstable Phoenix Martial Soul. Flender can initially guide its chaotic Soul Power out of him, but expects it to become harder to control as Ma grows stronger 5 30.

When Jodio joins the academy, Ma challenges his claim to be the boys’ “boss.” Jodio wins their brief contest, and Ma soon accepts him as a leader and training partner. To ease Ma’s evil-fire symptoms, Jodio prescribes strenuous training that drains his Soul Power; it reduces the flare-ups without curing them 3 4 12.

Ma later helps Jodio and Oscar with Passione’s activities in Suotuo City and competes with Oscar as the Legendary Lollipop team at the Great Soul Arena. His progress remains constrained by his Martial Soul’s flaw, and Jodio promises to find a cure 20 23 24.

After reaching Soul Elder, Ma chooses to undergo Jodio’s proposed repair despite the risks discussed by the teachers. Crazy Diamond restores his Martial Soul as a Fire Phoenix, leaving him free of the corruption and urges that had troubled him 44 45 46.

Appearance

Ma is initially described as a chubby boy with a round face. Three years of demanding training leave him broad and powerful without looking bulky—closer to the build of an assault-type Soul Master 4 10 24.

He complains about hard training but keeps going. His loyalty to Jodio grows into a stated ambition to fight beside him without being left behind. When offered an uncertain cure, he ultimately makes the choice himself 30 32 45.
