Background
Poseidon ended strife in the oceans, gathered faith, and created the Sea God godhood. He later passed that position to Tang San, whose conduct as Sea God became a source of resentment for him 2 35.
After returning to Douluo Star, Poseidon found Xiang Jun, a spirit born of the ocean. He reshaped him into a human infant and, when Xiang Jun turned six, created a Sea God martial soul for him using divine blood and his remaining Sea God authority. Poseidon now intends for Xiang Jun to become the next Sea God, though Xiang Jun’s share of the godhood’s authority is not enough to replace Tang San on its own 2 34.
Appearance
Poseidon appears to Xiang Jun as a towering phantom and is described in human form as an imposing middle-aged man 2.
- Wears gold-trimmed robes and a three-pronged divine crown when he first appears 2.
- Has a majestic presence that contrasts with his often flippant behavior 2 4.
Personality
Poseidon is proud of Xiang Jun’s progress and regularly compares him favorably with Tang San. He jokes with his student, reads Young A Bin in his Crystal Palace, and shows little concern for appearing dignified 2 21.
His hostility toward Tang San is more than personal irritation: Poseidon objects to his interference with Douluo Star instead of managing the ocean. He wants Xiang Jun to succeed him and is willing to use complaints, divine connections, and political arrangements to advance that goal—even when Xiang Jun objects 2 22 45.
Abilities & Skills
Sea God Authority
Poseidon retains a trace of Sea God authority despite having passed on the godhood 2.
- Used divine power to give Xiang Jun human form, then combined his divine blood and remaining authority to create Xiang Jun’s unusually pure Sea God martial soul 2.
- Retrieved the Seagod’s Trident from Tang San for Xiang Jun’s use 1 2.
- Cannot simply transfer the full godhood to Xiang Jun: Tang San remains its holder, and Poseidon seeks help from Elder Jin in arranging a succession 15 34.
Golden Thirteen Halberds
Poseidon teaches Xiang Jun techniques for wielding the Seagod’s Trident 2 21.
- Taught Xiang Jun the first three forms before his later visit to the Divine Realm 21.
- After confirming Xiang Jun had mastered them, imparted the fourth through sixth forms: Whale Fall Guard, Hundred Rivers Return to the Void, and Silent Vast Sea 22.
Divine Intervention
- Filed an anonymous report with the Divine Realm Committee before retrieving the Trident, temporarily leaving Tang San unable to interfere in the lower realm 2.
- Warns that gods cannot meddle in mortal affairs without authorization. He says reviving someone recently deceased may be possible, but becomes harder as more time passes 22.
- Used Sea God’s Light to remove Asura Divine Power from Gu Yuena’s wound 45.
- Intervened when a Thunder God godhood fragment began identifying Xiang Jun as an inheritor. Poseidon later said that, without his intervention, the competing divine powers might have torn Xiang Jun apart 35 36.
Relationships
- Xiang Jun — His chosen successor and student. Poseidon gave him the Sea God martial soul, supplied the Trident, and trains him to inherit the godhood 2 21 22.
- Tang San — His former successor and the current holder of the Sea God godhood. Poseidon resents his conduct and acts to prevent him from interfering with Xiang Jun 2 34.
- Elder Jin — An old friend whom Poseidon wants Xiang Jun to meet for help with the Sea God succession. The two also intervene during Xiang Jun’s encounter with the Thunder God fragment 15 34 36.
- Gu Yuena — Poseidon healed her wound in exchange for her agreement to marry Xiang Jun, hoping she would become an ally against Tang San. He required her to swear an oath on her Divine Soul, a decision Xiang Jun strongly opposed 45.
