Background / History

Poseidon created the Sea God Godhood through faith gathered after he quelled conflicts at sea. He later passed the position to Tang San, whose conduct as Sea God left Poseidon resentful—particularly his interference with Douluo Star’s child of destiny and his neglect of the seas 2 35.

After returning to Douluo Star, Poseidon found Xiang Jun, a Spirit of the Ocean drifting at sea. He reshaped him into a human infant and, when Xiang Jun turned six, gave him the Sea God Martial Soul using his divine blood and remaining Sea God authority. He also trained Xiang Jun in the Golden Thirteen Halberds 2.

Poseidon took back the Seagod’s Trident from Tang San and anonymously reported him to the Divine Realm Committee. With Tang San occupied by the investigation, Poseidon continued preparing Xiang Jun to inherit the Sea God position, though the Godhood itself remained in Tang San’s hands 1 2 15 34.

The report included evidence of 108 offenses compiled by Poseidon. The God of Destruction used this evidence while interrogating Tang San before the other God Kings. Tang San’s detention also interrupted his plans to interfere with Douluo Star and exploit its soul beasts’ fortune 62 63 64.

When Gu Yuena introduced Xiang Jun to Di Tian, Xiong Jun, Bi Ji, and Myriad Demon King at the Food God House, Xiang Jun summoned Poseidon’s phantom to reveal his own backing. Poseidon attended to support him and explained that Xiang Jun had originally been a Spirit of the Ocean. He further revealed that his divine blood and remaining authority had transformed Xiang Jun completely into a human, accounting for Gu Yuena’s inability to detect his former soul beast nature 59 60.

Poseidon subsequently accompanied Xiang Jun into the Far North and the Ice God Ruins. Inside the ruins, he broke through a thick rock barrier and destroyed a statue whose divine pressure affected the Ice Empress. He then encouraged Xiang Jun to absorb the extraordinary torso Soul Bone found within and helped him refine the surrounding ten-thousand-year profound ice marrow. After three days, Xiang Jun completed the absorption and reached level fifty; the bone was subsequently confirmed to be at the million-year level 66 70 71 72.

Appearance

Poseidon appears to Xiang Jun as a towering phantom 2.

• Wears a gold-trimmed robe and a divine crown with a trident-shaped circlet 2.
• Is described by Xiang Jun as an imposing, somewhat roguish middle-aged man 2.
• Has long blue hair and wears blue-and-gold robes, matching Tang Wutong’s description of the figure who bestowed Xiang Jun’s Martial Soul and weapon, although she mistakenly assumes that figure was Tang San 14.

Personality

Poseidon is an attentive but irreverent mentor. He praises Xiang Jun’s progress, readily teaches him further techniques, and jokes with him rather than maintaining a solemn divine manner. His bitterness toward Tang San frequently surfaces in comparisons between the two successors 2 21 22.

He also insists that a Sea God should govern the ocean and respect the rules against unauthorized interference in the mortal world 2 22.

His private behavior is notably undignified: he reads erotic fiction in the Sea God Temple, treats it as his “studies,” and complains when Xiang Jun interrupts him. He maintains this frivolous manner even before Gu Yuena and the ferocious beasts, surprising those who expect solemnity from the First Generation Sea God 21 22 44 60 66.

Despite his teasing, he closely monitors Xiang Jun’s safety and development. After the absorption of the million-year torso bone, he checks for discomfort and praises Xiang Jun’s talent and fortune, regretting that he had not met him before choosing Tang San 71 72.

Sea God authority

• Created the Sea God Godhood by gathering faith and retains a trace of its authority after passing on the position 2 35.

• Directed Xiang Jun toward the Golden Ancient Tree, saying an old friend’s help would be needed for his succession 15.
• Intervened when the Thunder God fragment appeared to initiate Xiang Jun into its inheritance. Poseidon later said he had prevented the two divine powers from tearing Xiang Jun apart 35 36.
• Transmitted the fourth through sixth halberd forms directly into Xiang Jun’s memories through his forehead’s trident mark: Whale Fall Guard, Hundred Rivers Return to the Void, and Silent Vast Sea 22.
• Explained that the Seagod’s Trident had become the vessel for the Thunder God Fragment’s power. He advised that Xiang Jun could eventually gain authority over thunder as his compatibility with the Thunder God increased 36.
• Recognized the exceptional torso Soul Bone as a potential core for Xiang Jun’s future Sea God Divine Armor and urged him to absorb it 71.

Divine power and combat

• Remains exceptionally powerful despite having relinquished the Sea God position; his strength has continued to increase over ten thousand years 59 70.
• Effortlessly shattered a nearly hundred-meter-thick rock barrier inside the Ice God Ruins without collapsing the surrounding cavern. The Ice Empress recognized that she could not reproduce the feat with the same ease and precision 70.
• Destroyed a divine statue with a Sea God Flying Kick, ending the accompanying pressure and supernatural phenomena. He dismissed the power confronting them as that of a Second-Level God at most 70.
• Maintained a protective barrier against the cold during Xiang Jun’s time in the ruins; after absorbing the million-year torso bone, Xiang Jun no longer needed that protection 72.

Knowledge of divine limits

• Says that reviving the recently dead may be possible, but becomes harder as more time passes 22.
• Warns that gods commit a serious offense by meddling in the lower world without authorization 22.

• Tang San — Former successor and current holder of the Sea God Godhood. Poseidon resents his conduct, reclaims the Trident, and reports him to the Divine Realm Committee 1 2 34. His evidence of Tang San’s 108 offenses becomes part of the God of Destruction’s interrogation, and he repeatedly states that he would have preferred Xiang Jun as his original successor 62 72.
• Elder Jin — Both take an interest in Xiang Jun’s succession and intervene during his encounter with the Thunder God fragment 34 35 36.
