"It's you!"
Blue Silver Tyrant Spear!
Everyone in Dorm Seven was taking a nap. Their afternoon schedule was packed, so they needed the rest.
Tang San sat cross-legged on his bed, meditating. He had not let up once in two and a half years.
Sensing an unfamiliar yet oddly familiar presence at the door, Tang San opened his eyes a crack. They instantly turned red.
He gripped his Blue Silver Tyrant Spear, snapped his wrist, and charged at the person in the doorway with a roar.
Two and a half years earlier,
Tang San and Xiao Wu had been cultivating at home.
Just before school started, a disheveled, blind Tang Hao had appeared in Holy Soul Village.
Tang San's heart lurched at the sight.
Wasn't Father looking for me a stepmother? What happened?
"Dad, your... eyes!"
Rotting flesh filled Tang Hao's eye sockets, giving off a terrible stench.
Tang San fumbled helplessly, not knowing where to begin.
"San..."
Feeling his son's embrace, Tang Hao spoke through a sob. But he no longer even had the means to cry.
"It was that wretched woman. I'll have my revenge... Cough, cough..."
Tang Hao broke into a fit of coughing. His breath was faint.
"A thousand meters outside Holy Soul Village, there's a small hill. At the top is a well-hidden cave. Take me there!"
Tang San reacted at once. Without another word, he draped one of Tang Hao's arms over his small shoulders and headed there.
Tang Hao ordered Xiao Wu to stay behind and forbade her from following.
How could he let an outsider learn of something so private?
Miserable as Tang Hao looked, Xiao Wu's heart still raced. Could he be a Titled Douluo? Should I slip away?
But how could a tiny place like Holy Soul Village have a Titled Douluo?
"Sorry, Xiao Wu. This concerns my family's privacy. I hope you understand."
Xiao Wu smiled and nodded to Tang San, showing that she understood.
At the hidden cave Tang Hao had described, Tang San lit a torch and slowly helped his father inside.
"Father, do you have some precious medicinal herb in here?"
Tang San's voice was urgent. His father was badly wounded and blind in both eyes. How could he not be anxious?
Tang Hao felt his way forward. He knew this place so well that instinct alone led him to a stalk of Blue Silver Grass.
Tang San noticed it too. He could not make sense of it. How could Blue Silver Grass grow in a cave with no light at all?
His father seemed strange as well. Longing, regret, and sorrow mingled on his disheveled face.
"San, come here and kowtow!"
Tang Hao's voice was weak, but his tone was stern.
Tang San did not understand. Raised without a mother's love, he regarded his father as his whole world and would never refuse him.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Three loud kowtows reached Tang Hao's ears. The faintest smile touched his lips as he explained.
"This is your mother!"
What?!
Tang San's pupils shook. How could this stalk of Blue Silver Grass be his mother? Impossible! Absolutely impossible!
But Father said it. Would Father lie to me?
"I know it's hard to understand. In the world of Soul Beasts, a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast can take human form. Your mother, the woman I loved, was a Hundred-Thousand-Year Blue Silver Emperor who did just that."
"Mother!"
Tang San could not take in so much at once.
"Father, never mind that for now. You brought me here because there's a way to heal your eyes, isn't there?"
"That's right. As expected of my son. You catch on quickly."
Tang Hao nodded and praised him.
Such simple praise made Tang San's heart tremble. He had longed for his father's approval for so long that his legs nearly gave way.
"There's a Hidden Compartment in the stone wall behind your mother. It holds a Soul Bone she left for you."
"It can regenerate, like grass returning after a wildfire."
"But I need to absorb it now to restore my eyes. Once you're strong enough, I'll return it to you."
Tang Hao's voice was feeble.
Tang San was young, but he knew about Soul Bones. Removing one was like hacking a bone out of your own body. How could he bear to let his father do that?
"No, Father."
"Removing a Soul Bone is no small matter. It would badly damage your body, and your cultivation would fall back too..."
"Enough. I know what I'm doing."
Tang Hao cut him off before he could go on.
Tang San puffed out his cheeks. He wanted to say more, but swallowed the words.
He felt along the wall and found a Hidden Compartment. It was well concealed!
"Father, I found it!"
Tang San ran back to Tang Hao with a smile, but froze the moment he opened the box.
After a while, Tang Hao heard no reaction from Tang San and began to panic.
Don't tell me the little brat saw the Soul Bone and couldn't resist absorbing it.
If he absorbs it now, how's he supposed to heal my eyes?
"San, what are you doing?"
Tang Hao sounded displeased, though his tone was not too harsh.
"Father, the box is empty! There isn't a thing in it!"
Startled, Tang Hao felt for the Wooden Box and took it back. There was nothing inside, only its smooth walls.
"Did you hide it from me? San, I wouldn't take it from you for good. Once you're strong enough, I'll remove the Soul Bone and give it back. Why would you do this?!"
Tang Hao could not believe it. He came here to check every so often, and it had still been there last time.
Could the Soul Bone have grown legs and run off? Someone must have taken it—but that was even less likely. No one could find this place, and even if they did, who would bother feeling along every inch of wall?
"Father, how can you suspect me? I'm your son! We're family!"
Tang San's voice brimmed with hurt. How could his father think that of him?
Tang Hao realized his words had been hurtful. He had watched Tang San grow up steady and sensible. His son probably would not do such a thing.
He pulled Tang San into a big hug, then ruffled his hair.
Wrapped in that warm embrace, Tang San's hurt came flooding out. When it subsided, a smile spread across his face again.
Then something occurred to Tang Hao.
The Soul Bone had probably been stolen. Finding it again would be like searching for a needle in the sea.
But then... Ah Yin!
Tang Hao bent over the Blue Silver Grass and carefully sensed its aura. His face turned livid.
"Ah Yin!"
With a furious cry, Tang Hao twisted the Blue Silver Grass into several pieces. Blue sap smeared his hands.
Tang San's heart tightened. "Father, that's Mother!"
"Ah... Ah Yin... my Ah Yin..."
"Waaah..."
Overcome with rage and grief, Tang Hao spat out a mouthful of blood.
"San, your mother... someone took her!"
"This is just ordinary Blue Silver Grass. The woman I love is gone. How am I supposed to go on living?"
Pfft!
Tang Hao spat out another mouthful of blood!
