Holy Soul Village, Douluo Continent.
In the early morning, a ray of sunlight slipped through the window and fell across a battered wooden bed.
The boy on the bed slowly opened his eyes.
His gaze was deep and cold, as though he had lived through countless ages and seen through everything in the world.
"I... came back?"
Tang San looked at his hands. They were small and pale.
He no longer had the body of a God King or the Sea God Trident, but the memories of his previous life remained in his mind.
Everything I regretted in my last life, I can make right in this one.
Spirit Hall, Dad, the Clear Sky Sect, and Xiao Wu. This time, I won't take the wrong path.
In his previous life, he had become a God King, yet he still had many regrets.
His father, Tang Hao, had suffered for years because of his mother. Though Ah Yin had been revived, the process had been agonizingly difficult. Xiao Wu had even sacrificed her life for him.
This time, he could change it all before it happened.
Just then, a voice called from outside.
"Tang San!"
"Get up!"
"Today's the day you enroll at Nuoding Academy!"
Tang San's brow twitched. That was Old Jack's voice.
He pushed open the door.
Outside the courtyard stood a white-haired old man.
It was Old Jack, the chief of Holy Soul Village.
A boy stood beside him.
He was slender and handsome, with delicate features.
Tang San glanced at the boy, a flicker of puzzlement in his eyes.
Who is he?
In his previous life, no one else from the village had gone to Nuoding Academy.
Old Jack introduced him with a smile.
"Little San, how could you forget? This is Ye Lin."
"Like you, he has Innate Full Soul Power. He can become a soul master."
"You two are going to Nuoding Academy together today."
Ye Lin gave a faint smile.
Tang San barely looked at him. His mind had already turned to what was different about this life.
Ye Lin was an orphan from Holy Soul Village. He had Innate Full Soul Power, and his martial soul was his body.
Su Yuntao of Spirit Hall had invited him to join, but Ye Lin had refused.
Tang San gave it no further thought. An ordinary child would hardly affect his plans.
This person had not existed in his previous life.
Did my rebirth change the world?
But Tang San paid Ye Lin little heed.
A Body Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power showed some talent, but nothing more.
Before someone with the memories of a God King, no so-called genius mattered.
Led by Old Jack, the three of them set off on foot for Nuoding Academy.
On the surface, Ye Lin was merely a boy whose martial soul had just awakened.
In truth, he had crossed over from another world.
Su Yuntao had invited Ye Lin to join Spirit Hall, but Ye Lin had refused.
He knew how the story of this world went. Tang San would destroy Spirit Hall.
His best option was to stick close to Tang San, the favored son of fate.
Even if Tang San refused to take him along when he became a god,
staying by his side would still bring Ye Lin enormous benefits in the future.
With that in mind,
Ye Lin stole a glance at Tang San beside him.
His brows drew together slightly.
For some reason,
he felt that this Tang San was different from the one described in the book. He did not seem nearly as easy to get along with. He was downright surly.
As someone who had crossed over,
Ye Lin had his own opinion of Tang San.
Tang San was a hypocrite through and through.
On the surface, he was gentle, loyal, and devoted to his friends. He would even give his life for his companions.
Deep down, he was filthy, underhanded, and cunning. He cared far too much about appearances and was exceptionally good at hiding his true nature.
One face for the world, another inside.
Even so, he was at least supposed to appear gentle—the sensible child the adults of Holy Soul Village all knew.
Wasn't he making it a little too obvious now?
Why wasn't he even pretending?
Suddenly, Old Jack stopped in his tracks.
A voice sounded inside his head.
This old man's stingy as hell. He's the chief of Holy Soul Village, taking two children with Innate Full Soul Power to Nuoding Academy, and he won't even hire a carriage. He's making us walk the whole way. What a miser.
Old Jack: ???
He froze, then turned and stared hard at Tang San.
"Little San, what did you just say?"
Tang San blinked. "I didn't say anything."
Ye Lin hurried to explain.
"Grandpa Chief, Tang San really didn't speak."
Old Jack looked at Tang San, then at Ye Lin, utterly baffled.
What was going on?
He had clearly heard it, and it had been Tang San's voice. But Tang San had not opened his mouth.
Was I hearing things?
He rubbed his ears. "I must have misheard."
With that, he turned to lead the way again.
But the next moment, the voice sounded once more.
I'm exhausted from all this walking. What use is this old man besides showing us the way? He can't provide any resources, and there's nothing to gain from him. If I didn't still need him to take me to Nuoding Academy, I wouldn't bother walking with him.
Old Jack went rigid.
The tone was exactly the same as before, and the words were unmistakably about him.
What does he mean, there's nothing to gain from me? I watched him grow up, and now I'm personally taking him to Nuoding Academy. And he looks down on me for it?
The more Old Jack thought about it, the angrier he grew. He turned around again.
"Little San, what on earth are you saying?"
Tang San's frown deepened.
"I'm not saying anything."
"Really?"
"Really."
Old Jack fixed him with a hard stare. "Then who was speaking just now?"
Ye Lin stood to one side, looking from Old Jack to Tang San. His expression grew strange.
What was happening?
This wasn't in the book.
Old Jack suddenly realized something.
That voice had sounded directly inside his head.
Could I be hearing Tang San's thoughts?
The voice rang out again.
Why does this old man keep staring at me? Has he lost his mind?
Idiot.
That settled it for Old Jack.
Suddenly, the child he had watched grow up seemed nothing like the one he thought he knew.
After they had walked a while, Old Jack pulled a few dry flatbreads from inside his coat.
He broke off a piece and handed it to Ye Lin. "Hungry, child? Have a bite to tide you over."
Ye Lin took it. "Thank you, Grandpa Chief."
Old Jack nodded and took a bite himself. As he chewed, he glanced at Tang San from the corner of his eye.
Tang San was hungry.
After his rebirth, this body was only six years old, and Tang Hao had taken poor care of him. They had spent half the day walking mountain roads, and his stomach had long since emptied.
Seeing Old Jack and Ye Lin each holding a piece of flatbread and eating with obvious relish,
he could not help holding out his hand. "Grandpa Jack, could I have a piece too?"
Old Jack thought to himself,
When you need something, I'm Grandpa Jack. When you don't, I'm an old geezer.
Tang Hao, Tang Hao. You've raised quite a son!
He turned to Tang San. "You want some too?"
Tang San nodded.
"Eat shit."
