Background / History

Tang San was previously an outer disciple of the Tang Sect in Ba-Shu. In that life, he had no family or friends, devoted himself to making hidden weapons, and secretly learned the sect’s internal arts. After transmigrating, he retained his knowledge of Tang Sect cultivation, mechanisms, medicines, and poisons, eventually resolving to carry its legacy into his new world 7 42 69 129.

Tang San grew up in Holy Soul Village with his father, Tang Hao. After his awakening, he and fellow villager Lin Xuan received work-study places at Notting Academy. There, Tang San became Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and shared Dorm Seven with Lin Xuan and Xiao Wu 1 3 5 6.

At Notting, he divided his time between cultivation, blacksmithing, hidden-weapon forging, and martial-arts practice with Lin Xuan. He also taught Lin Xuan close-combat fundamentals and discussed herbs and toxicology with him. In return, Lin Xuan regularly supplied Clear Mind Talismans that helped Tang San train 15 17 19 69.

After leaving Notting, Tang San traveled with Lin Xuan and Xiao Wu toward Shrek Academy. The three later moved to Heaven Dou City, where Tang San fought alongside Lin Xuan’s group and helped plan its Soul Beast hunts and tournament preparations 20 21 58 78 87 88.

During his time at Shrek, Tang San repeatedly found himself caught between his loyalty to Yu Xiaogang and his friendship with Lin Xuan. He apologized for his teacher’s treatment of Lin Xuan, but Lin Xuan assured him that their friendship would remain unchanged. After Yu Xiaogang’s death, Tang San recovered his remains and kept vigil at his funeral, with Lin Xuan sitting beside him despite their disagreements with the deceased. Liu Erlong subsequently welcomed Tang San as her nephew and arranged for Shrek’s teachers and students to move to Blue Tyrant Academy 42 47 56 58.

In Heaven Dou City, Tang San accepted Ink Jade Divine Bamboo from Lin Xuan, strengthening both his body and Blue Silver Grass. Lin Xuan later gave him five hundred thousand Gold Soul Coins for hidden-weapon materials and directed him toward the Strength Clan’s workshop when ordinary city smiths could not manufacture sufficiently precise components. Tai Tan accepted his designs and arranged production, giving Tang San access to craftsmanship beyond his own current capabilities 75 77 96 120 122 123.

After becoming a Soul Ancestor, Tang San renewed his effort to establish the Tang Sect. Although the sect still lacked a headquarters and full formal establishment, he and Lin Xuan performed a simple incense ceremony appointing Lin Xuan deputy sect master. Tang San then began teaching him the Mysterious Heaven Skill and prepared detailed circulation diagrams, envisioning himself handling logistics and hidden-weapon production while Lin Xuan served as the sect’s leading combatant 138 139 140 141.

Personality

Tang San is reserved and tactical. He declined Dorm Seven’s newcomer fight because he did not care who held the title, but quickly took command when the group needed a survival plan against Zhao Wuji. His loyalty to Yu Xiaogang made Lin Xuan’s criticism of his teacher difficult for him to accept, even though it prompted him to question Yu’s theories 6 16 27.

He is fiercely protective of his companions. He risked injury trying to save Xiao Wu and Lin Xuan from the Titan Giant Ape, then attacked Dai Mubai after Dai insulted Lin Xuan while the two were missing 54 56.

His gratitude is expressed through practical support. He initially refused Lin Xuan’s five hundred thousand Gold Soul Coins because he believed he should not accept a reward without merit, but accepted after Lin Xuan framed it as an investment in their shared future. He promised to upgrade Lin Xuan and Xiao Wu’s equipment first and later shared the Tang Sect’s cultivation methods to repay his friend’s help 96 138 141.

Tang San places cultivation and hidden-weapon development ahead of romance. He recognizes Xiao Wu’s feelings for Lin Xuan and regards her as a companion rather than a romantic interest. When Lin Xuan teases him about finding a partner, he states that his immediate goals are catching up in Soul Power and creating stronger hidden weapons 20 22 101.

He respects the Tang Sect’s restrictions on teaching outsiders, but is pragmatic about rebuilding it on a new continent. Rather than simply passing on its supreme arts informally, he recruits Lin Xuan into the sect. To explain his inherited knowledge without revealing his previous life, he presents a story about meeting a reclusive old man while gathering firewood as a child 138 139.
