Background / History

Shanks was a member of the Roger Pirates and trained under Silvers Rayleigh alongside Buggy and Gol D. Allen. Of the three, Shanks showed the greatest early talent, mastering Armament and Observation Haki after two years of training. 139

After the Roger Pirates disbanded, Shanks returned to Mary Geoise, his birthplace. Imu branded his left arm with an Abyss Mark as “proof of returning to the embrace of God.” When Shanks later rejected the Celestial Dragons and asked for its removal, Imu only concealed the mark deeper within his arm. 55

Shanks established the Red-Haired Pirates and became a Sea Emperor. Allen’s rapid rise drove him to seize territory and repeatedly pressure the other Emperors, accelerating his emergence as the fourth Yonko. 13 211

He stole the Rubber-Rubber Fruit, also called the Sun God Nika Fruit. Allen later informed him that its awakened power could turn imagination into reality but may shorten the user’s lifespan. 231

Shanks is a red-haired swordsman who carries Griffin at his side. He is commonly depicted with stubble and floral-patterned trousers, details Yamato mockingly used to characterize him. 20

Shanks is confident, theatrical, and highly competitive, particularly around Allen. He enjoys banquets, jokes with his crew, and habitually presents himself as stronger or less injured than he is. 13 264

Despite his carefree behavior, he is an effective captain with a strong sense of responsibility toward his crew and territory. He sought to mediate a ceasefire before committing the Red-Haired Pirates to war against Big Mom, and he chose to leave Makino in Foosha Village rather than bring a non-combatant into pirate life. 118 285

He can also be visibly vulnerable. The possibility of losing his marked left arm terrified him, and he was humiliated by the realization that his Abyss corruption had endangered Nico Robin. 55
