Background / History

Monkey D. Dragon is Garp's son; Dragon later defects from the Marines and intervenes to protect Ohara from the Buster Call. Garp and Sengoku recognize that Dragon's arrival makes the operation untenable and order a retreat 18 165.

Garp's past is closely entangled with Gol D. Roger's circle. He claims he was close to Allen's father, though Allen points out that Garp's version of “close” involved pursuing him around the world. Sengoku later confronts Garp over secretly saving and raising Roger's adopted son, Ace, in Foosha Village 253 328.

His sense of justice is personal rather than obedient. He openly approves of Allen's attack on the Celestial Dragons, despite the reaction it provokes at Marine Headquarters 19. In battle, he is easily stirred by provocation—particularly from Kaido and Yamato—but can also choose restraint, stopping Allen from slaughtering defeated Marines and surrendering when he judges a direct fight hopeless 208 382.

At Marineford, Garp receives reports that Rayleigh, Gaban, and a powerful child are opposing the Buster Call at Ohara. Impressed and unsettled by Allen's ability to defeat a Headquarters Vice Admiral with a combined three-slash technique, Garp orders the Marines to prioritize eliminating the Roger Pirates' remnants 17. Dragon's arrival forces the Marines to retreat from Ohara 165.

Confrontation with Allen and Kake

When Allen refuses to release all of his captives, Garp attempts to negotiate and then threatens a fight. After Allen targets Kake and launches a compressed Space Sphere toward the Marines, Garp uses Galaxy Impact to neutralize its eruption of Sword Qi and prevent a large-scale disaster 121.

Conflict with Yamato

Garp's rivalry with Yamato begins with mutual insults and develops into repeated serious battles. He agrees not to participate in actions against Allen and Yamato in exchange for keeping his humiliation secret, but insists on fighting Yamato one-on-one 181. Garp pushes Yamato hard enough to contribute to her Devil Fruit awakening, then watches her transformation with curiosity rather than stopping it 197.

Although Garp holds back during part of their duel, their clashes devastate the surrounding forest. Yamato eventually uses the threat of exposing his secret to force a Marine retreat 190 198.

Crocodile Negotiation

Sengoku assigns Garp to obtain Crocodile from Allen after the World Government strips Crocodile of his Shichibukai title. Marineford and Hachinosu Conflicts
