"Do the pajamas fit?" Bai Xuan asked Xilin, rubbing the tip of his nose.

"Yes." Xilin nodded gently. "They're much more comfortable than the Holy Robe."

"Good." Bai Xuan smiled, then took out a vial of Gene Enhancer and handed it to her.

"What is this...?"

"Gene Enhancer. It'll give all your attributes a small boost."

Xilin looked down at the faintly glowing liquid in her hand, confusion flickering in her eyes. "How do I use it?"

"Just inject it into your body."

"Inject it..." she repeated softly, then handed the vial back to Bai Xuan. "I'm not familiar with this. Could you help me inject it, Master?"

"Of course." Bai Xuan didn't mind. "Just hold out your arm."

"All right." Xilin rolled up her sleeve, exposing a stretch of fair skin.

"It might hurt a little. Bear with it."

"All right."

Bai Xuan reached out and took Xilin's wrist.

The instant his fingertips touched her skin, a strange tingling sensation shot through his body—

"The Zombie attack on the Public Security Bureau was planned well in advance," said a middle-aged man in glasses, his voice grave. "This wasn't just an open provocation against the Ninghang City Investigation Bureau. It was a blatant threat. We must uncover their real objective and protect Ninghang City's millions of residents."

"But what do they want?" a woman asked as she touched up her makeup in a mirror. "What could a Public Security Bureau office have that's worth taking such a risk for?"

"We have an answer."

Huang Xin spread out a dossier. "They're after Liu Qian because her aunt is Liu Mufei, deputy director of the White Sea City Investigation Bureau. The item Xu Yan previously brought into Ninghang City is connected to Liu Mufei too."

"They may want to use Liu Qian to threaten Liu Mufei."

"What the hell is Liu Mufei doing?" a bald man cut in. "Was turning White Sea City upside down not enough? Now Ninghang City has to suffer for it too?"

"Who knows?" The woman put down her mirror and gave a cold laugh. "Well, she did send White Sea City's finest junior Investigator to clean up the mess."

As she spoke, she cast a pointed look at Li Hongyou across the table.

"Huh? What does this have to do with me? I barely know Liu Mufei, and she didn't assign me this mission." Irritation immediately crossed Li Hongyou's face.

"Really? You expect me to believe that?"

"Believe whatever you want."

"You—"

"That's enough, Shen Ling. Leave it," the middle-aged man warned.

"But if she knew her niece might be in danger, why did she agree to transfer her to the Ninghang City Public Security Bureau?" The bald man scratched his head, bringing the discussion back on track. "Wasn't that sending her to her death?"

"Liu Qian chose to take the security officer post herself," Huang Xin explained. "Besides, the trouble at the White Sea City Investigation Bureau began after Liu Qian transferred to Ninghang City. Even Liu Mufei couldn't have foreseen all this."

"Couldn't foresee it, or is there more to the story?" Shen Ling gave a soft laugh. "From what I know, Liu Mufei is no ordinary woman. How could she not have considered something like this?"

"I don't know," Huang Xin said, shaking his head.

"Enough," the middle-aged man in glasses interrupted. "That isn't our concern. Our current task is to help the White Sea City Investigation Bureau find that item and ensure Liu Qian's safety. The rest is outside our jurisdiction."

"As for Liu Qian, I suggest moving her to the Safe House first," Huang Xin continued. "Until this is resolved, Miss Li Hongyou can handle her protection throughout. Does that work?"

"No objections," Li Hongyou replied lazily.

"Good. We'll proceed with Huang Xin's plan." The middle-aged man adjusted his glasses. "Now, what do you all think about the two Espers who've recently appeared in Ninghang City?"

Huang Xin spoke up at once. "I don't think they seem like bad people. At the very least, they've saved our security officers several times now."

"True. They've taken care of a lot of trouble."

"They eliminated Xu Yan the Ghoul and resolved this Zombie crisis."

"Judging by the strength they've shown, they'd rank among the best even among junior Investigators."

"Oh, please." Shen Ling cut in impatiently. "In our eyes, how are unregistered Espers any different from Anomalies?"

"Shen Ling, that's not fair," Huang Xin said with a frown. "Quite a few people here used to be Anomalies before the government recruited them into the Investigation Bureau. I think those two might have what it takes to join us."

"That's not for you to decide." Shen Ling rolled her eyes again. "Besides, why do you trust them? Do you know who they are?"

"We don't even know their names!"

"They suddenly showed up in Ninghang City. Don't you find that suspicious?"

The others around the table nodded in agreement.

"Shen Ling has a point."

"Those two are suspicious."

"We should investigate their backgrounds first, then decide what to do once we're sure there's no problem."

To the Investigation Bureau, being trustworthy often mattered more than being powerful.

Just then, Li Hongyou's nonchalant voice cut in. "If the Ninghang City Investigation Bureau doesn't want them, the White Sea City Investigation Bureau will take them."

"I heard you. So what?"

Li Hongyou raised her eyes to Shen Ling, her tone openly indifferent.

Shen Ling gritted her teeth and snorted. "Forget it. I can't be bothered arguing with a minor."

"Huh? You old hag, Shen. Are you looking for a fight?"

"You—! I'm not talking to you anymore!"

"That's enough. Both of you, stop." The middle-aged man adjusted his glasses and put an end to the argument. "Li Hongyou and Huang Xin will continue handling the Public Security Bureau case. Shen Ling, you're in charge of investigating those two Espers."
