Hiss...
Gao Zisheng trembled all over and collapsed to the ground.
When he'd faced Lin Tiejun and Lei Zhen before, he could still ask Gao Tianxiong to get him out of trouble.
But the man before him was...
"Ow!"
Gao Zisheng struggled to his feet, only to slip and fall again.
Worse, he landed right beside a pile of dog shit.
His mouth hit it square on, filling with filth!
The sight was so ridiculous and disgusting that the people around him burst out laughing.
First he'd wet his pants. Now he was eating shit!
But he had no time to care. He spat out the filth, dropped to his knees, and apologized.
"I was wrong! I really was!"
"I was only joking around with Yue Xiaofei!"
"And I didn't actually dig up the grave, so I haven't committed a crime!"
"Please, be generous and let me go!"
Gao Zisheng begged for mercy, but inside, he hated Yue Xiaofei with every fiber of his being.
Why?
Why did Yue Xiaofei have someone so powerful backing him?
He came from a prominent family, yet he had to kneel and apologize to this poor kid's mother?
And eat dog shit on top of it? What humiliation!
He swore to himself:
Yue Xiaofei, just you wait!
I'm only bowing my head today to get through this!
Just like King Goujian, I'll endure the humiliation and bide my time!
Once I'm out, I'll pay you back tenfold!
You, your dead mother, and your crazy grandfather will all die miserable deaths!!!
Sha Zhenjiang paid no mind to Gao Zisheng's impotent rage. He turned to Yue Xiaofei. "Child, what's your grudge with this man?"
Yue Xiaofei explained in a low voice:
"He tried to steal my college entrance exam results."
"He sent people to bully my grandfather."
"I had no choice but to carry a plaque to file a complaint!"
What?!
Surprise flashed through Sha Zhenjiang's eyes. "You're that young man?"
Though he was far away in Handong, he had heard about it.
He'd thought the boy had backbone and promise. He'd never imagined Yue Xiaofei was Ye Qingmei's son.
Sha Zhenjiang felt even guiltier.
If Ye Qingmei had been alive, how could the Yue Family have been bullied?
He had failed to look after a hero's son and had let him suffer so much.
"There's something else!"
Yue Xiaofei looked at Gao Zisheng, pinned to the ground, and a chill entered his eyes.
"When Gao Zisheng tried to take my results, two elders stood up for me!"
"But after the investigation, Principal Li took the blame, while Gao Zisheng was cleared and released!"
"That's why he dared come desecrate my mother's grave today!"
"What?"
Sha Zhenjiang whipped around, fury blazing in his eyes. "In broad daylight, something like this happened?"
He roared at Li Dakang, "Li Dakang, did you know about this?"
"I... I didn't!"
Li Dakang shuddered and hurriedly shook his head.
"You didn't?"
Sha Zhenjiang sneered, his gaze sharp as a blade.
"A hero's son was bullied, and the culprit was released to carry on as he pleased?"
"You think saying you didn't know absolves you of all responsibility?"
"Investigate it at once! If you can't get to the bottom of it, you might as well go home and farm!!!"
Sweat beaded on Li Dakang's forehead as he endured the scolding.
In theory, Sha Zhenjiang had no authority over Jiangcheng.
But with Sha Zhenjiang's connections and influence, one word from him would be enough.
The problem was, the Gao Family had Jiang Bichij, a well-connected woman of considerable influence, behind it!
But Sha Zhenjiang had spoken. How could Li Dakang argue?
Li Dakang could only steel himself and make a firm promise. "Rest assured! I'll investigate thoroughly and give you a satisfactory answer!"
Seeing this, Gao Zisheng panicked completely.
He scrambled over to Yue Xiaofei, forcing a fawning smile onto his face.
"Xiaofei, for old times' sake as classmates, give me a break! I'll never do it again!"
"Hmph!"
Yue Xiaofei stepped back, his eyes cold. "Since you came all this way, you can put on a pair of silver bracelets... before you go back!"
Gao Zisheng's expression changed drastically.
He pointed at his disreputable friends, trying to shift the blame. "They talked me into coming! I only came to watch. I didn't touch anything! Arrest them if you want, but this has nothing to do with me!"
"Bullshit, Gao Zisheng!"
Blondie was the first to jump forward. "You said you wanted to teach Yue Xiaofei a lesson! You even said you'd dig up his mother's grave!"
"Exactly! You do rotten things all the time. You curse at people who can't speak, beat people who can't see, harass widows, and dig up the graves of families with no heirs!"
"We've been sick of you for ages!"
"And you can't even get it up!"
One after another, they spilled Gao Zisheng's embarrassing secrets and misdeeds.
It was a vicious spectacle of friends turning on each other!
"You bastards!"
Gao Zisheng was beside himself with rage.
"Take them all!"
Sha Zhenjiang waved a hand impatiently.
His men stepped forward and snapped silver handcuffs onto Gao Zisheng.
Terrified out of his wits, Gao Zisheng secretly pulled out his phone and texted his father, Gao Tianxiong, for help.
Gao Zisheng: [Dad, save me! I've been arrested!]
Gao Tianxiong quickly replied: [Who did you offend this time?]
Gao Zisheng: [I went after Yue Xiaofei, but I ended up offending Sha Zhenjiang!]
Gao Tianxiong: [Which Sha Zhenjiang? There's no one by that name in Jiangcheng.]
Gao Zisheng: [The one from Handong!]
Elsewhere.
When Gao Tianxiong saw the message, his face changed and the veins stood out on his forehead.
He immediately thought of the convoy he'd encountered on the expressway earlier.
He'd even wanted to curry favor and ask for news. He hadn't expected his "filial" son to cause such a disaster!
Gao Tianxiong hastily asked: [How did you offend him?]
Gao Zisheng: [Yue Xiaofei's mother was Ye Qingmei. She was the hero from a year ago...]
Gao Tianxiong stared at the message, stunned!
After a moment's silence, he replied: [Behave yourself in there and turn over a new leaf. As far as I'm concerned, I never had a son like you!]
After that, no matter how many messages his son sent, he did not reply.
Gao Zisheng stared at his phone, his face ashen.
Just then, Li Dakang called over several cemetery workers and barked, "What are you standing around for? Hurry and dig up Ms. Ye's coffin so it can be moved!"
The workers picked up their shovels and were about to begin.
"Wait!" Sha Zhenjiang suddenly said.
Everyone turned toward him at once.
Sha Zhenjiang looked at Ye Qingmei's headstone, his tone solemn. "I propose that we take Ms. Ye's remains back to the Hall of Heroes in Handong. That is where her deeds deserve to be honored."
But Yue Xiaofei shook his head, his voice firm.
"Thank you for the offer, but my mother always said that fallen leaves return to their roots. She was from Jiangcheng. Let her stay in Qingshan Cemetery, back in her original resting place."
Sha Zhenjiang studied him for a moment, then nodded. "All right. I'll respect your wishes."
Then the Qingshan Cemetery workers stepped forward with crowbars to pry up the coffin's base.
Sha Zhenjiang raised a hand. "Stand back!"
Everyone froze.
Then Sha Zhenjiang bent down and gripped the wooden carrying poles on either side of the coffin.
Li Dakang's face changed. He rushed forward to stop him.
"You mustn't! You lead Handong. How can you do such manual labor?"
The other bigwigs were stunned too.
They had followed Sha Zhenjiang for years, but never had they seen this iron-fisted leader humble himself like this.
Sha Zhenjiang did not straighten up. His gaze rested on the coffin, and his voice brooked no argument.
"Ms. Ye died for the people of Handong!"
"Carrying her for part of her journey is the least I can do!"
