Joanna went on alert at once. She had been holding Lin Mo's arm, but now she turned slightly, putting herself between him and Maeve.

"Why are you following us?"

Maeve looked at her and explained.

"I just want to come along."

"Why?"

Joanna stared at her, venting the frustration she had felt toward The Deep as well.

"Do you have a thing for Lin Mo?"

The moment she said it, the air went still.

Lin Mo stood beside them, looking from one to the other. The corner of his mouth twitched.

Maeve was clearly caught off guard by Joanna's challenge, but she quickly pulled herself together.

Joanna said nothing, so Maeve went on.

"I want to see if I can do my part."

"If I can't help, that's fine too. And if you cause any more trouble in the future, I can keep cleaning up your messes."

At the end, Maeve added in a calm voice that somehow sounded earnest.

"Please. I'm begging you."
