Background / History

Early in Lin Mo’s childhood, Edgar presses Vogelbaum to produce superhumans Vought can replicate and control, rather than rely on Lin Mo as an unexplained success 4. His warning helps direct Vogelbaum toward creating an embryo-stage experimental subject using Soldier Boy’s genetic material and Compound V, resulting in the Homelander Project 5.

At this stage, Edgar has not yet gained full control of Vought. Older white executives retain key positions, while his political judgment, business acumen, and rational decision-making have secured him a place in core management. Success with Joanna’s project represents a possible route to control of the company 18.

As the executive responsible for Joanna’s project, he studies her growing dependence on Lin Mo and approves longer periods of contact between them. He regards their bond as a way to make Joanna stable enough for a public career 18 19. After secretly observing the children, he spends two days reviewing recordings of their interactions and questions the researchers about Joanna’s dependence, her reactions to separation, and whether Vought can control Lin Mo himself 18.

Edgar later approves a plan to treat Lin Mo sincerely and gradually bring him into Vought, accepting a psychological assessment that favorable treatment will discourage rebellion. At the same time, he orders an unannounced stress test to determine whether Lin Mo can stop Joanna from attacking during a staged threat 25. After the resulting conflict, he recognizes that Joanna’s concern for Lin Mo’s feelings may lead her to conceal actions that would disappoint him, rather than abandon her willingness to kill in his defense 31.

When Vought plans to introduce Joanna as Homelander, Edgar argues that Lin Mo should join The Super Seven alongside her. He challenges board members who cite Lin Mo’s Asian identity as an obstacle, while also warning that separating the pair could put Vought at risk 44 45. He then approaches Lin Mo privately with an offer of status, resources, and freedom outside the research facility 45 50.

The negotiation collapses when Edgar insists Vought will not let its assets simply leave. Lin Mo reveals that his test results concealed his true strength, spares Edgar, and destroys the Bunker 50 51 52. Edgar subsequently agrees to Lin Mo’s terms: no further experiments without consent, independent identities and property, and freedom to refuse Vought’s work. He proposes Godolkin University as a route toward The Super Seven and arranges their enrollment documents 53 55. Their enrollment includes placement in the Special Development Program and a separate shared residence 56.

Edgar continues to manage their prospective careers through publicity and university rankings 59 60. After a harassment scheme involving smear posts against Lin Mo is uncovered, he promises that Vought will deal with those responsible, assigns Margaret to continue investigating, and informs Lin Mo that the university will increase the difficulty of his practical combat tests 75. He also consults Lin Mo about Maeve’s suitability for The Seven, offering to consider another candidate if Lin Mo has serious objections 76.

After Thomas Godolkin’s underground laboratory is uncovered, he takes charge of the aftermath, receives the infant Marie, and prepares a public account that conceals Vought’s connection to the experiments 113 116 117. By this point, he is identified as Vought’s new CEO 113. On reviewing Marie’s records, he notes her blood and cell manipulation, exceptional Compound V compatibility, and considerable potential. Having recently adopted Neuman from Red River, he considers raising the two girls together because their abilities share a fundamental similarity 116.

His public account presents the laboratory as a criminal organization’s illegal research base, with Maeve, Lin Mo, and Joanna credited for destroying it and rescuing its victims. The account conceals Thomas, Compound V, and the true nature of the underground experiments while using the incident to promote the three prospective heroes 117.

Later, when Lin Mo seeks Original Compound V, Edgar identifies Clara Leisinger as a possible source 130 131. He explains that Clara is Frederick Vought’s wife and an early recipient whose body still contains Original Compound V, while warning that her extreme racism may make her unwilling to cooperate with Lin Mo. Edgar is privately pleased when Lin Mo, Joanna, and Maeve unite against her 131 132.

At Lin Mo’s request, Edgar arranges a meeting of Vought’s executives and shareholders for the following morning and supplies Clara’s address and records. He understands that Lin Mo intends to settle accounts with the old guard over their opposition to him and their involvement in Joanna’s childhood treatment. Rather than defend them indiscriminately, Edgar considers using the confrontation to remove obstructive senior figures and consolidate his authority 132.

After Joanna kills people responsible for her childhood experiments during the meeting, Edgar takes responsibility for the corporate aftermath. He expects to manage executive replacements, changes involving shareholders, and an explanation acceptable to the outside world. Lin Mo also confirms to him that Clara is dead 144. The resulting vacancies create a substantial administrative burden, with unsigned documents accumulating on his desk and surviving attendees deeply frightened 146 147.

When military satellites detect Lin Mo and Joanna in space without protective equipment, the Military contacts Edgar for information. He recognizes that its real concern is whether the pair can be restrained, particularly by Vought, and sees an opportunity to obtain military support for Supes. He arranges an in-person meeting for the next day 147.

Edgar subsequently proposes a long-term military purchase of Compound V, but the Military rejects its use on soldiers because of the high death rate among adult recipients and the unpredictability of resulting abilities. Discussions instead turn toward recruiting existing superhumans. After a month of intermittent negotiations, Edgar tells Lin Mo that the Military approached him and Joanna on its own initiative and that he made no commitments on their behalf 150. He privately considers having Lin Mo pressure the government, but refrains because he cannot predict or control how far Lin Mo might take such intervention 151.

Edgar also promotes Madelyn from Public Relations Vice President to president 152. Within Vought’s research organization, he issues standing instructions to cooperate with Lin Mo and his companions, provide what Superman requests, and avoid taking unnecessary independent action. These instructions later lead the director of a hidden facility beneath a hospital to grant Lin Mo access to its Compound V laboratory and recent research materials without obstruction 192.

Appearance

Edgar is a Black man who dresses in a neatly tailored dark suit and is usually described as composed and difficult to read 18 50.

Personality

Edgar evaluates people through their usefulness to Vought and prefers candid, transactional negotiations to appeals to heroism. He is willing to change methods quickly: once Lin Mo proves he cannot be controlled by force, Edgar shifts from coercion to cooperation 50 53 60.

His calm manner does not prevent him from confronting the board’s racial prejudice. He supports Lin Mo’s inclusion in The Super Seven with ability data, market arguments, and the practical danger of separating him from Joanna 44 45.

Edgar is politically opportunistic within Vought. He is prepared to let Lin Mo remove hostile shareholders and executives when doing so also strengthens his own position, and he sees the old guard’s fear of Lin Mo and Joanna as a means of making the remaining leadership easier to manage 129 130 132 144.

He regards Vought primarily as a pharmaceutical company rather than an entertainment business. Superheroes, films, and merchandise are its public face, but Compound V is its underlying asset; given sufficiently favorable military orders and government support, he would consider abandoning superhero entertainment altogether 150.

Although initially overconfident in his ability to predict Lin Mo, Edgar learns to respect the limits of his authority. He clarifies that he has not accepted military obligations for Lin Mo or Joanna and avoids using Lin Mo to pressure the government because the consequences could exceed his control 150 151. His instructions to Vought’s researchers similarly favor accommodation over attempts to obstruct or independently manage Superman 192.

His treatment of Marie reveals a gentler side. His expression softens when he sees her, he handles her with practiced ease, and his visible affection reassures Maeve that he is not simply preparing to send the child into another experiment 116.
