Background / History
Wartime Losses and Forbidden Research
During the Second Shinobi World War, the death of his disciple Nawaki and the loss of a friend taught Orochimaru how fragile life was. Seeing Hiruzen Sarutobi grow older reinforced his dissatisfaction with conventional training, leading him to pursue forbidden knowledge and eternal life 18 22.
After being assigned to Root, he initially kept his distance from Danzo. That changed when Danzo supplied Hashirama Cells: their extraordinary vitality offered a promising research subject. Orochimaru drew closer to him to secure experimental materials and funding, despite Konoha’s prohibition on researching the cells 18.
He also undertook a classified wartime infiltration of Kumogakure involving a Tailed Beast. Orochimaru later states that he encountered the beast, obtained tissue, and studied Tailed Beasts extensively afterward 126.
Appointment as a Supervising Jonin
Following Danzo’s unauthorized attack on Tsukimi, Hiruzen removed Orochimaru from Root and assigned him to supervise Tsukimi’s new team. The appointment served two purposes: reassuring the Ino–Shika–Cho clans and distancing Orochimaru from Danzo 18.
Orochimaru initially refused because teaching would interrupt his research. Learning that eight-year-old Tsukimi had independently killed three Root Chunin changed his mind. He accepted to investigate the boy’s altered Shadow Secret Technique while avoiding scrutiny during Danzo’s downfall 18.
At Training Ground Six, he tested Tsukimi, Asuma, and Kurenai by challenging them to take two bells within ten minutes. Their coordinated distractions, clone feint, shadow restraint, and underground approach allowed Kurenai to seize both bells. Orochimaru praised their tactics and passed the team 19 20.
Poison Investigation and Mount Tenmoku
During the team’s escort mission, Orochimaru secretly watched their battle against an ambush without intervening. Afterward, he acknowledged their growth and identified the attackers’ green powder as Green Velvet Grass, a valuable but legal medicinal ingredient 27.
When the mission uncovered an obscure toxin and a smuggling operation, Hiruzen assigned Orochimaru to coordinate its analysis with the Medical Department. Their work identified the toxin’s core structure and distinctive traits, providing a lead for a B-Rank investigation in the Land of Rivers 33 34 35.
In the Land of Rivers, Orochimaru identified metal fragments as products of Cloud Hidden lightning-style forging, though the team did not treat their origin as proof of responsibility. He subsequently fought a Sunagakure squad, killed three of its members, and used Genjutsu to question the surviving leader 38 39 40 41.
The investigation led to Rasa’s Living Puppet experiments at Mount Tenmoku. Eager to examine the research, Orochimaru fought Rasa and Sunagakure’s elite fighters while Tsukimi’s infiltrators emptied the laboratory. He also blocked Rasa’s furious attack with the Ten Thousand Snake Formation 43 49 50 54.
Living Puppet Research
Hiruzen ordered the recovered experimental records catalogued and permanently sealed in Konoha’s top-secret archives, prohibiting unauthorized study. Separately, Tsukimi completed a private transaction with Orochimaru, delivering a finished Living Puppet and the complete core data to his underground laboratory 59 61.
Orochimaru spent the next eight months absorbed in those materials, leaving Tsukimi to lead the team on ordinary C- and D-Rank missions. The research produced preliminary physical-revitalization results and major progress in Hashirama-cell compatibility 77 78.
He later supplied Tsukimi with a gentler physical-activation medicine and its formula. Combined with Tsukimi’s training and existing enhancements, the treatment gradually improved strength, recovery, endurance, and chakra production 83 87.
Joint Chunin Exams
After Orochimaru emerged from seclusion, Hiruzen appointed him chief examiner for the joint Chunin Exams. He reviewed the rules, procedures, and participating teams while anticipating the unusual research subjects the event might provide 78 79.
Before the Forest of Death exam, he gave Tsukimi a small white messenger snake. Their agreement exchanged Orochimaru’s assistance for notification of promising experimental subjects with unusual physiques 125 126.
Tsukimi used the snake to summon him when Sasori’s poison left Rin unconscious. Orochimaru examined the toxin, recognized similarities to Chiyo’s Poison Art, and prepared an antidote that completely neutralized it 125.
Privately, he requested additional high-quality test subjects in exchange for intelligence about a faint Tailed Beast-like presence among the Cloud Hidden Genin. This warning helped Tsukimi anticipate Yugito’s concealed Tailed Beast Chakra 126 140.
Tsukimi subsequently collected Hozuki, Yuki, and Kaguya clan bodies for their arrangement, then captured and killed two White Zetsu while preserving them as research specimens. Their delivery to Orochimaru is not shown in the supplied chapters 138 161.
After Yugito’s Tailed Beast Bomb destroyed the messenger snake, Orochimaru remained confident that Tsukimi had survived. His composure contrasted with Jiraiya’s concern over his student’s apparent death 161.
Appearance
- Pale skin and a white robe, giving him a sinister appearance in his dim laboratory and on the training ground 18 19.
- Golden, slit-pupiled eyes, repeatedly compared to those of a snake 19 27.
- Long hair falling over his shoulders 27.
- A long, narrow tongue, which he frequently runs over his lips when intrigued 20 27 78.
- A cold, raspy voice and a lingering chemical, formalin, or medicinal scent 19 20 27.
Personality
Orochimaru is outwardly controlled and emotionally guarded. In combat, he often treats dangerous opponents as entertainment, evading their attacks until he chooses to end the encounter with lethal force. Unusual techniques and experimental possibilities interest him more visibly than ordinary village affairs 18 39 40 49 50.
His research dominates his priorities. He initially resists teaching because it would cost laboratory time, and later withdraws from squad leadership for eight months. His fascination with Tsukimi includes a persistent desire to study the boy’s body and unusual abilities 18 77 78.
As a mentor, he favors survival under real danger over protective supervision. Nawaki’s death shaped his refusal to act as a babysitter: he considers surviving the harsh Shinobi World a prerequisite for fulfilling one’s potential 22 27.
His cooperation with Tsukimi is useful but transactional. He honors their agreement by treating Rin, then charges additional experimental subjects for intelligence. Nevertheless, his teacher–student bond with Hiruzen remains intact, and he continues accepting public responsibilities in Konoha 78 125 126.
At this point in the story, he has not joined Danzo in abducting village children for Hashirama-cell transplant experiments. The narrative explicitly distinguishes his remaining moral boundary from his later original-timeline conduct 78.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Orochimaru uses snakes for restraint, killing, battlefield defense, and communication 20 39 40 50 125.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands — releases snakes from his arm to destroy puppets and penetrate an enemy’s defenses 39 40.
- Snake swarms and giant snakes — entangle opponents, intercept poisoned needles, block escape routes, and crush targets 39 40.
- Ryūchi Cave summons — three great snakes occupy five Sunagakure Jonin during the fight against Rasa; these summons are explicitly below Manda’s tier 50.
- Ten Thousand Snake Formation — blocks Rasa’s enraged attack 54.
- Winding Evil Snake — a charged attack that several Sand Jonin counter with five layered Earth-Style Walls 55.
- Messenger snake — enables covert contact with Tsukimi, but is killed in the Tailed Beast Bomb blast 125 161.
Taijutsu and Weapon Handling
Orochimaru combines extreme flexibility, precise movement, and attacks aimed at openings rather than matching an opponent’s strength directly 19 20.
- Evades a surrounding Shadowkhan assault with small shifts and cuts through approaching soldiers with a kunai 19.
- Disrupts Tsukimi’s attack by striking his wrist joint, then circles aside and kicks him away 20.
- Uses a chakra pulse to shake liquid shadow shuriken off his weapon, then adapts by avoiding further parries 19.
Elemental Ninjutsu
- Water Release: Water Formation Wall — counters Asuma’s Fireball Jutsu during the bell test 20.
- Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu — produces a massive fireball that swallows and breaks apart incoming wind blades 39.
Genjutsu and Interrogation
Orochimaru uses Yin Release Chakra and a hypnotic vocal rhythm to compel a captured Sunagakure Jonin to answer questions 41.
- Extracts the prisoner’s mission source, objectives, and connection to Pakura 41.
- Takes over an interrogation that Genin-level Kurenai cannot reliably conduct against a strong-willed Jonin 40.
- Cannot obtain information the prisoner does not possess; repeated questioning yields no secret leadership deployments 41.
Poison Art and Pharmacology
Orochimaru is identified as a top-tier Poison Art specialist and Hiruzen’s preferred expert for the team’s toxin investigation 33 125.
- Identifies Green Velvet Grass and explains its medicinal properties 27.
- Uses laboratory instruments and Medical Department collaboration to analyze an obscure toxin 33 34.
- Tests Sasori’s poison on a summoned snake before preparing a specialized antidote 125.
