Background / History

Asuma is the Lord Third Hiruzen Sarutobi’s youngest son. At the Academy, he resents being told what to do and wants to surpass his father. His rivalry with Nara Tsukimi begins when Tsukimi defeats him in a practical test. Asuma trains with Hiruzen for a rematch but loses again; the competition helps him become more disciplined and brings him closer to his father 4 6 9 10 14.

After graduating early, Asuma joins Tsukimi and Kurenai Yuhi under Orochimaru. The squad passes Orochimaru’s bell test through a coordinated attack, with Asuma contributing a Fire Release diversion and a disguised Shadow Clone 18 19 20. On their first escort mission, Asuma subdues an attacker but is shaken when Tsukimi orders the captured enemies killed. He later recommends withdrawing when the mission reveals evidence of human experimentation, judging the danger beyond their assigned rank 24 26 29.

The escort is upgraded to a B-rank special reconnaissance mission after the squad returns with evidence. On a subsequent investigation in the Land of Rivers, Asuma defeats a Sunagakure Chunin with Kurenai, helps clear the battlefield, and carries intelligence to the Land of Fire border to request reinforcements for an operation at Mount Tenmoku. Command procedures delay the reinforcements, and he arrives after the main battle. Hiruzen ultimately upgrades the investigation to S-rank and commends Asuma and Kurenai for putting the mission first 33 35 39 41 44 55 56 58.

During the White Fang Incident, Asuma argues that Konoha had to respond to the strategic losses caused when Hatake Sakumo abandoned a mission to save his comrades. Though familiar with the village’s political struggles, he is grim when Tsukimi warns that Danzo may exploit the incident. Asuma joins the watch over the rescued ninja Inoue Toru and later brings Tsukimi news that damaging rumors about Sakumo have spread 63 66 67 68.

Over the following eight months, Orochimaru is largely absent from squad leadership. Asuma continues training and taking ordinary C- and D-rank missions with Tsukimi and Kurenai, gaining experience and improving their teamwork. He also prepares for the joint Chunin Exams with coaching from family elders 77 83. In the Forest of Death, he fights foreign Genin alongside his teammates, but grows frustrated by how far Tsukimi, Kakashi, and Guy have outpaced him. Obito’s awakening of the Sharingan makes Asuma worry that even his former sparring partner may have surpassed him 108 124. After Tsukimi survives Yugito’s Tailed Beast Bomb, Asuma helps search for him, carries the exhausted Tsukimi away from the blast site, and remains with the group while he recovers 156.
