Background / History

Obito arrives late on his first day at the Academy, saying he stopped to help an old woman cross the street. In his introduction, he declares that he wants to become Hokage and earn everyone’s recognition 4.

His first practical match ends in defeat when Rin’s cheering distracts him just as he gains an advantage over Ken Tanaka. He also loses in the first round of the later class-ranking tournament while repeatedly glancing at her 5 9. After Kakashi applies for early graduation, Obito demands the same despite having the class’s lowest written-test score and a practical ranking in the teens; teacher Takashi Murakami rejects his approach 12 13.

Obito joins Tsukimi, Guy, and Asuma in daily after-school training, later bringing Rin into the group. After two years, he passes the early-graduation exams and joins Minato’s team with Kakashi and Rin 13 14 21. The team initially receives D-rank missions; Obito is frustrated when Tsukimi’s team receives a C-rank assignment and later completes a mission reclassified as B-rank 21 33. At Mount Tenmoku, Obito arrives with Minato’s team after the fighting has ended and envies Asuma’s credit for what Kakashi identifies as an S-rank mission 56.

During the White Fang Incident, Obito objects to Sakumo’s removal from his post for saving a comrade. He helps the group investigate the threat to Sakumo and volunteers to watch Danzō, but accepts Tsukimi’s judgment that his stealth is inadequate for that assignment 63 65 67. Ahead of the joint Chunin Exams, the Uchiha clan includes Obito in a special training program, and he trains hard to leave his former dead-last habits behind 83.

When three Kirigakure Genin bully Academy students and insult Konoha, Obito intervenes and defeats all three in public. He withdraws when Tsukimi calls him back as a stronger Kirigakure squad arrives 93 94. In the Second Exam, his team wins the scrolls needed to pass, but Sasori then attacks Kakashi to avenge his parents’ deaths at Sakumo’s hands. Obito and Rin deal with Sasori’s accompanying Genin before helping Kakashi face his puppets 115 116 117. Obito kicks Sasori’s Sand Skeleton away after Kakashi severs its chakra threads, then combines his Fire Release with Kakashi’s attack to help destroy another puppet 118 119.

A concealed poisoned puppet wounds Rin and leaves her unconscious. Obito’s distress awakens his Two-Tomoe Sharingan; he fights through Sasori’s puppets to reach her, disabling Foam and burning Rain Dragonfly. Shadowkhan intervene to protect Rin, and Sasori retreats 120 121 122. Obito wants to pursue him, but Kakashi persuades him that treating Rin must come first 123. After Rin’s treatment, Obito continues the exam alongside Tsukimi and their friends. He promises to keep Tsukimi’s wide-ranging Shadowkhan scouting ability secret and later helps confront a Kumogakure squad 134 140.

Appearance

• Wears goggles, which he adjusts during his Academy introduction and continues to wear after joining Minato’s team 4 21.
• After awakening the Sharingan, his eyes turn crimson and display two black tomoe while the ability is active 120 123 140.

Personality

Obito is outspoken, impulsive, and quick to boast—especially about becoming Hokage or surpassing Kakashi. He is also easily embarrassed when Tsukimi points out how often he watches Rin during fights 4 5 11. Rin’s encouragement reliably lifts his spirits, while Kakashi’s blunt remarks frequently provoke an argument 5 21.

He struggles with consistency before joining Tsukimi’s strict training routine. Even after repeated losses, he keeps seeking stronger opponents and asking for another chance 12 13. He is eager to help others and strongly values comrades: he defends Sakumo’s decision to save a teammate and steps in when Kirigakure Genin bully Academy students 63 93.

Training and experience make Obito more composed in battle, but pride and provocation can still make him reckless. Kakashi and Rin restrain him when Sasori mocks his lack of a Sharingan; after Rin is poisoned, protecting her matters more to him than celebrating its awakening 115 119 120 121.

Relationships

• Rin Nohara — Close friend and teammate whom Obito openly admires. She encourages him after defeats and calms his arguments with Kakashi 4 5 21. Her praise remains important to him as his skills improve; seeing her poisoned and unconscious triggers his Sharingan awakening, and he fights to reach and protect her 93 115 120 121.
• Kakashi Hatake — Teammate and principal rival. Obito repeatedly vows to beat him, and the two bicker even while working under Minato 4 7 21. Their cooperation improves through missions and the fight with Sasori, though Obito still seeks Kakashi’s approval and reacts sharply to his blunt remarks 115 118 119 123.
• Nara Tsukimi — Friend and training partner. Obito initially assumes Tsukimi cannot beat Kakashi, then recognizes the gap after their tournament fight; Tsukimi later helps train him 7 10 13.
