Background / History

Hatake Sakumo encourages Kakashi to meet Nara Tsukimi after they witness Tsukimi defeat three older Academy students. Intrigued by Tsukimi’s unfamiliar shadow technique, Kakashi approaches him as a potential rival 2 3.

At the Academy, Kakashi aims to become a ninja as strong as his father. His talent has already made him known as a prodigy, but his confidence leads him to assume he has found every weakness in Tsukimi’s technique. Sakumo challenges that assumption, and Kakashi admits he has underestimated his opponent 4 7 8.

Kakashi loses to Tsukimi in the class ranking final after both use clones and concealment to outmaneuver each other. They form the Seal of Reconciliation afterward. Kakashi continues to seek rematches, even after graduating early 10 11 13.

Kakashi and Tsukimi continue to spar after graduation, with wins going both ways. During one rematch, Tsukimi notices that Kakashi cannot concentrate. Kakashi confides that Sakumo has become withdrawn since returning from a failed mission, and asks Tsukimi for help. He then joins his friends in investigating the events surrounding the White Fang Incident and accepts Tsukimi’s cautious approach to finding evidence 61 62 65 67 73.

Eight months after the incident, Kakashi is still developing his White Fang swordsmanship and spars Might Guy to a draw. Before the joint Chunin Exams, the Lord Third summons Kakashi and Tsukimi to discuss the exams’ political stakes and charges them with securing a victory for Konoha 77 83 84.

During the exams, Kakashi defeats Zabuza Momochi in a public sword fight. In the Forest of Death, he leads Obito and Rin through several successful encounters before Sasori of the Red Sands targets him to avenge the parents Sakumo killed in the Second Shinobi World War. Kakashi and his teammates survive the ensuing fight, but Rin is poisoned; Tsukimi’s Shadowkhan intervene, and Sasori retreats. Kakashi chooses to prioritize Rin’s treatment over pursuing him 94 96 115 116 122 123.

Sasori attacks Kakashi’s team again later in the Second Exam. Tsukimi’s Shadowkhan hold him off long enough for the trio to escape. After a Tailed Beast Bomb devastates part of the forest, Kakashi and their friends decide to return and search for Tsukimi, who later rejoins them unharmed 150 154 161.

Personality

Kakashi is reserved, blunt, and intensely competitive. He openly challenges Tsukimi and regularly needles Obito, whose boasts he has little patience for 3 4 5 21.

His tactical observations are sharp, but Sakumo warns him that insight is not the same as knowing everything an opponent can do. Kakashi takes the correction seriously and, after losing the ranking final, treats defeat as a reason to improve rather than give up 7 8 11.

Kakashi’s reserve gives way to a rare plea for help when Sakumo’s distress leaves him unable to focus on training. He trusts Tsukimi’s judgment during the subsequent investigation. Later, he shows restraint when Sasori escapes, putting the poisoned Rin’s survival ahead of his desire to settle their feud 62 73 123.

He understands the strategic purpose of Konoha’s hosting the joint Chunin Exams and solemnly accepts the Hokage’s charge to defend the village’s honor 84.
