Hatake Sakumo encourages Kakashi to meet Nara Tsukimi after they witness Tsukimi defeat three older Academy students. Intrigued by Tsukimi’s unfamiliar shadow technique, Kakashi approaches him as a potential rival 2 3.

At the Academy, Kakashi aims to become a ninja as strong as his father. His talent has already made him known as a prodigy, but his confidence leads him to assume he has found every weakness in Tsukimi’s technique. Sakumo challenges that assumption, and Kakashi admits he has underestimated his opponent 4 7 8.

Kakashi loses to Tsukimi in the class ranking final after both use clones and concealment to outmaneuver each other. They form the Seal of Reconciliation afterward. Kakashi continues to seek rematches, even after graduating early 10 11 13.
