Background and Story Role

After jumping into a river during a dispute over her family’s university recommendation, Tinglan is rescued by Jiang Xingnian. While recovering, she recognizes her surroundings as a novel she has read and recalls grim outcomes for herself and her family. In the original story, her health deteriorates after the river incident, and she is eventually trafficked into a forced marriage 1 2.

Tinglan’s knowledge helps her family challenge Bai Rui’s claim that Lu Jiancheng fathered her child. She later confronts Bai Rui directly, using Bai Rui’s attachment to He Wei to counter her threats against the Lus. Although Tinglan had wanted the university recommendation, she refuses it once she recalls that the national college entrance exam will be restored, intending to earn admission herself 3 5 6.

On a visit to thank Jiang for saving her, Tinglan defends him against theft accusations. She identifies a discrepancy in Huo Qi’s tea that gives Jiang a way to expose the real thief 7 9. Later, as a substitute teacher, she investigates Lu Xiaohu’s exploitation of female pupils. She works with Jiang to interrupt an incident without publicly exposing the student, then enlists Er Ya to bring villagers to the school, where Lu Xiaohu and principal Qin Shujie are discovered together 13 16.

Personality

Tinglan’s private thoughts are sarcastic, dramatic, and frequently occupied with food or the prospect of watching a confrontation. She is much less carefree when someone vulnerable is at risk: she stands up for Jiang before she has proof of his innocence and, despite being bullied by several schoolgirls, recognizes that they are being misled and exploited 1 4 8 15.

She is fiercely loyal to her family without excusing their mistakes. Tinglan supports her mother against Liu Cuilan and criticizes her father for letting his generosity impose years of hardship on Wang Xiuhong 11 13.
