Background / History

Jiang has known hardship since childhood. At the educated-youth compound, he lives alone in a room with a sound roof, apart from the crowded, leaky rooms shared by the other youths. He keeps to himself, but rumors that he steals their belongings persist even after he moves into his own room 7 8 9.

After Jiang pulls Lu Tinglan from the river, she and her mother visit to thank him. During their visit, Zhou Zhuo publicly accuses him of theft. Tinglan challenges the accusations, and Jiang uses a difference between two varieties of tea to expose Huo Qi as the thief. He later finds the other stolen belongings hidden in a blocked smoke flue beneath the communal sleeping platform 1 7 8 9 13.

Jiang later helps Tinglan investigate Lu Xiaohu’s conduct toward female students. When they hear him pressuring a girl, Jiang stops Tinglan from bursting into the room, concerned that public exposure could harm the student. They make enough noise at the entrance to interrupt him. The next day, Jiang accompanies Tinglan as she watches Lu Xiaohu and Qin Shujie at the school before villagers arrive and discover the men together 15 16.
