Background / History

During his fifth year, James participated in Severus Snape's public humiliation. Snape's anger and humiliation contributed to his use of the slur “Mudblood” against Lily Evans, ending their friendship at the Gryffindor Tower 1 110.

James later used his inherited Invisibility Cloak to pursue Snape into the second-floor girls' lavatory and attacked him with a Stunning Spell. Snape countered, exposed James beneath the cloak, and immobilized him; both were subsequently disciplined by McGonagall and Dumbledore 22 23. Dumbledore later confiscated the Marauder's Map after it revealed the Marauders' nicknames and tracked everyone inside Hogwarts 33.

At the Duelling Club, James challenged Snape after Snape defeated Remus Lupin. Their match became unusually dangerous: Snape countered James's spells, ripped apart his robes with an enhanced Cutting Curse, disarmed him, and attempted to use an Unlocking Charm while James was suspended in the air. Personality

James is impulsive, confrontational, and intensely competitive with Snape. He uses the Invisibility Cloak for a nighttime confrontation, presses Flitwick for an immediate duel after Lupin's defeat, and remains angry even after being restrained at the end of his own match with Snape 22 60 61.

His confidence is closely tied to his status as a Potter, a Gryffindor, and a Quidditch player. He believes Lily may eventually return his feelings and initially treats Snape's changes—including his grooming, friendships, and authority—as obstacles to that goal 110.
