Background and History

Mo Bai summons Mahoraga during a confrontation with the Threnodian Aleph-1 at Roy Icefield. Mahoraga strikes Mo Bai immediately, then attacks Aleph-1 with a sword capable of erasing Void Matter. Mo Bai had seeded his cocoon with Leviathan’s essence to give him a chance to survive Aleph-1’s power; as his wheel turns, Mahoraga grows strong enough to drag Mo Bai into Void Matter Space 158.

Inside that space, Mahoraga tries to keep Mo Bai alive and confined so their summoning ritual—and Mahoraga’s own existence—will continue. Their fight teaches Mahoraga to counter Mo Bai’s techniques and use Black Flash. Mo Bai ultimately makes a Binding Vow that frees Mahoraga from the Ten Shadows while taking his Adaptation. Before escaping, Mo Bai tells him to survive and promises to return, giving him a chance for revenge 162 164 166 167.

Mahoraga cannot find an exit from Void Matter Space. Over more than a thousand years, he consumes Void Matter to grow stronger, though human memories embedded in it threaten to influence his developing sense of self. He bargains with Aleph-1 for a new wheel, sends frequencies toward Solaris to warn Mo Bai of their coming fight, and asks Aleph-1 to prepare a battleground 231 232.

In their rematch, Mahoraga’s Gluttony and specially made Prayer Beads counter much of Mo Bai’s arsenal. Mo Bai eventually returns with a white blade that sends Mahoraga back into his shadow as a subdued Shikigami without erasing his mind. Their conflict continues in a different form: Mahoraga later initiates a restrained spar because he resents being consulted mainly for the Cursed Tools stored in his wheel. When he asks why Mo Bai indulged the fight, Mo Bai explains that he still regards Mahoraga as his Shikigami and recognizes something of his own former loneliness in him 233 238 248 285 286.

Appearance

Mahoraga is a hulking Shikigami whose body was deathly pale when first summoned and grew darker during his time in Void Matter Space 158 227.

Personality

Mahoraga initially behaves like a newly awakened creature, but rapidly becomes calculating. He recognizes that keeping Mo Bai trapped will preserve the ritual, attempts to injure himself to gain a useful resistance, and learns anger and fear as his independence develops 158 162 166.

His thousand-year isolation turns revenge on Mo Bai into a purpose for surviving. He wants a decisive fight against Mo Bai at full strength, not an effortless victory over an opponent who has given up. After being subdued again, he remains defiant; his later sparring expresses a desire to be engaged as a thinking being rather than used only for his wheel and tools 232 229 248 285.

Abilities and Skills

Adaptation

Mahoraga’s original golden wheel allowed him to adjust to threats he survived. Mo Bai later removed the ability, but not the resistances Mahoraga had already gained 158 166.
