Law was a divine commandment given to mortals, teaching them what constituted sin and laying down rules for them to follow.
In ancient times, when heaven and earth were in turmoil and the world had only just begun, neither Selûne, the Lady of Silver, nor Shar, the Lady of the Night, had any concept of law. Selûne was kind by nature but acted on impulse. She had a strong moral sense and good intentions, yet her actions were not always right. She had no fixed principles, nor any concept of order.
In contrast, Shar acted with far more planning and forethought. Thus, their clashes generally began with Shar stirring up trouble, Selûne responding and retaliating, and both sides then lying low until their next confrontation.
Order arose because mortals, after enduring long ages of chaos and disorder, yearned for tranquility, peace, and stability. Thus, gods of order gradually gained their favor.
But that was a digression. Returning to the word "law," it could be understood as a god's demands of their mortal followers, or as what those followers had to do to receive that deity's protection.
That was law.
The simplest law was: believe in me and receive eternal life.
At the same time, laws changed according to the needs of mortals and deities. For example, early Christianity had once taught, "Only the poor can enter heaven. For a rich man to enter heaven is as difficult as a camel passing through the eye of a needle."
Yet a few centuries later, it became: only wealthy people who bought indulgences were qualified to enter heaven. Broke bastards? Get lost!
That was how changing circumstances brought about changes in law.
