Background / History
Creation and the Original War in Heaven
After Ao created Realmspace and its Crystal Sphere, Selûne and Shar emerged from the primordial void. Selûne represented the universe’s first light, while Shar embodied primordial darkness. They initially lived in harmony 5 288.
When Chauntea arose and asked for warmth, Selûne brought the Eternal Flame from the Elemental Plane of Fire and ignited the sun, allowing the earth to support life. This disagreement over light and creation became the foundation of the sisters’ War in Heaven 5 288.
Unable to defeat Shar through continued combat, Selûne stripped away most of her divine essence and hurled it at her sister. The attack severely wounded Shar and barely secured victory. Their colliding powers gave birth to Mystryl, the first Goddess of Magic 698.
Decline and the Time of Troubles
Selûne’s weakened condition eventually drove her to become Sune’s subordinate deity. Their arrangement provided protection rather than ending their friendship 119.
During the Time of Troubles, Selûne lost access to her realm and suffered impaired power and memory. Shar impersonated the “real Lady of Silver,” captured her, and nearly brainwashed her into becoming a Chosen of the Night. Adventurers rescued Selûne; High Priestess Naneze Sarrel played a critical role, and Khelben helped coordinate the rescue. After recovering her power, Selûne defeated Shar in Waterdeep 5 162 204.
Waterdeep became a holy site commemorating that victory. After returning to intermediate rank, Selûne peacefully left Sune’s pantheon to pursue an independent path 5 119.
Appearance
Selûne’s Lady of Silver form has silver-white hair, clear emerald-green eyes, fair luminous skin, and a mature, maternal appearance. One manifestation in her realm is explicitly three meters tall 163 287.
- Three principal aspects: the maiden-shaped Maiden of the Moon, the young-woman aspect Selûne, and the mature Lady of Silver 162.
- Clothing: frequently wears white, sky-blue, or pale blue-green gowns; later appearances include a white, gold-iris embroidered qipao 5 423 493.
- Jewelry: pearl necklaces and crescent-shaped sapphire earrings 5 152.
- Footwear: appears barefoot in her garden, but also wears Greek-style sandals and open-toed heels 5 388 423.
- Divine ornamentation: blue rose petals are normally concealed beneath her halo 388.
Personality
Selûne treats her followers as children and offers care without demanding repayment. After healing Aaron, she asks only that he remain healthy and help people in need. Her approach to independence is similarly parental: once she believes someone can stand alone, she steps back rather than maintaining control 6 287.
Her gentleness does not prevent moral confrontation. She warns Aaron against reckless killing, sacrificing innocents, and confusing spiritual integrity with accumulated power. When he accepts a relic in exchange for concealing the Hellriders’ betrayal, she directly rebukes him 65 162 388.
She is also whimsical. Impulsive decisions and shifting directives historically made it difficult for her clergy to follow a consistent long-term policy. Against Shar, she usually defended and counterattacked rather than pursuing a decisive end to their conflict 287 288.
Her affection for Shar survives their rivalry: she asks that her sister be spared if possible. Her relationship with Aaron becomes more possessive and explicitly romantic, while her secret occupation of Eleanor’s body shows that her own conduct does not always respect the autonomy she advocates 288 443 545.
Abilities & Skills
Moonlight and Moonfire
Selûne channels lunar radiance into healing, protection, and destructive magic 5 183 389.
- Converts moonlight into milky-white moonfire, filling the pond used to renew Aaron’s body 5.
- Heals injuries through manifestations and grants shields of divine power; the protection given to Aaron’s companions lasts three days 183.
- Infuses weapons with moonlight damage, ranged lunar attacks, and Moonfire spells 65 389.
- Her healing is not unlimited: Disma and Maximian remain injured after receiving aid because their wounds are too severe 183.
Restoration and Soul Healing
Her blessing repairs both physical and spiritual damage 5 6 12.
- Restores Aaron’s body and soul, leaving him capable of bearing divine authority and with Charisma raised to 22 5 6.
- Temporarily suppresses the Chaos Gods’ curse rather than permanently removing its underlying danger 6.
- Rebuilds Isobel’s body after Aaron saves her soul from dissolution in the Shadowfell; Selûne cannot accomplish that rescue alone 406.
- Opens Halisstra’s soul, strengthens Eilistraee’s virtues within it, and suppresses Lolth’s lingering influence 673.
Divine Blessings and Chosen
Selûne can bestow favor, divinity, enhanced weapons, and religious advancement 67 73 562.
- Blesses Eleanor’s Moon’s Hand warhammer after her donation to the Church 67.
- Advances Eleanor directly from Touched One to Moon-Bathed 73.
- Grants Eleanor a sliver of divinity and Legendary advancement for reclaiming her holy city 562.
- Rewards Aylin’s service during the Battle of Waterdeep with a sliver of divinity 406.
- Confirms Aaron as her Chosen while explicitly acknowledging that his power originates elsewhere 289.
Heavens Magic
Aaron’s celestial magic gives Selûne’s clergy access to spells beyond their existing divine repertoire 152 163 286.
- Compatible powers include stars, moon, and the starry sky; her divine form rejects the sun and night components during the initial merging 163.
- The additional spell list supports divination, stellar attacks, altered celestial phenomena, and signaling through the Starry Signature spell 163 286.
- Eleanor and coordinated Selûnite clerics use Heavenly Meteor Burst to destroy a Legion Devil formation during the defense of Suzail 226.
Manifestation, Possession, and Divine Perception
Selûne appears through avatars, relics, and invested divine objects 197 388 442.
- Manifests through the Tears of Selûne relic and can emerge from the Wand of the Fourth Moon during ceremonies 197 388.
- Responds to a powerful summons of faith from good lycanthropes, spending divine power to descend across the ocean 442.
- Secretly inhabits Eleanor without the cleric’s knowledge; repeated possession allows Aaron’s Chaos influence to affect Selûne’s own divine body 443 583.
- Recognizes Amaunator’s craftsmanship in Karsus’s Magic Box and suspects that his divine blood locks the artifact 389.
- Direct intervention remains constrained, particularly after the Time of Troubles; she warns that she may be unable to counter threats from Shar, Gruumsh, or Cyric personally 5 163.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Moon’s Hand warhammer — carried by Selûne when she appears in the Phlogiston Sea during Aaron’s emergence as a true deity 663.
- Sword of the Dark Moon — reforged from Aaron’s broken sword and bestowed on him. Adds armor-bypassing moonlight damage and a ranged, frost-aspected Moonlight Slash; Selûne associates it with a weapon she used while running an inn in Waterdeep 65.
- Three Moonstones — commissioned from three legendary clerics and given to Aaron to activate a power-channeling device in her ruined temple near Arabel 163.
- Wand of the Fourth Moon — a Moonminster weapon containing a sliver of her divinity, through which she may appear at annual celebrations 197.
- Tears of Selûne — holy relic used to transform Eleanor’s Moon’s Hand into an artifact of the same name. Grants protection, enhanced damage against magical defenses, a once-per-week escape from death, and a seventh-circle Moonfire spell 388 389.
- Word of Truth Lasso — Aaron’s protective spell condensed into a bracelet-like object of pure energy, intended to counter the Cyrinishad. Selûne agrees to wear it despite doubting that Cyric can brainwash deities 493.
- Golden Apple — awarded to her by Aaron as the goddess most beautiful to him personally. Its placement is part of Shar’s attempt to fracture the goddesses’ relationships 544 545 546.
Church and Divine Realm
Moon Gate
Selûne’s realm contains a moonlit garden, lakes, a waterfall descending from the heavens, forested mountains, and Sacred White Trees. She summons Aaron there for private counsel and receives other divine visitors 5 162 287.
Worship and Temples
- Followers: predominantly women, especially adult women. The Church treats symbols of womanhood, including human breast milk, as sacred 3.
- Temple requirements: architecture is unimportant; an open-air shrine or magnificent hall is acceptable. A shimmering pond and moonlit garden are indispensable 4.
- Waterdeep: a holy site associated with Selûne’s victory over Shar; Moonminster is a central institution of her worship 5 162.
- Night of the Sacred Rites: observed on a full or new moon; fortunate clerics receive summons to speak with her in her realm 148.
- Harpers: Selûne’s temples honor Harper heroes who defended peace and justice 162.
- Silver Moon Opera Troupe: travels to perform and preach, but also conducts investigations, conspiracies, and assassinations against people its members judge wicked 303.

Commercial Growth and Outreach

In the Sunset Lands, Eleanor promotes the faith through free holy-day meals, poor relief, and half-price healing. These services make Selûne’s Church the territory’s most widespread religion. By the time Selûne approaches greater-deity strength again, its worshippers have increased by millions across the Sword Coast and central Realms 251 493.
