Maximian was a Sword Saint Monk.
As mentioned before, Sword Saint Monks were a relatively pure physical combat class. Although Sword Saint Monks also knew Ki Magic, they mostly used their ki to strengthen themselves and increase their damage output.
Different monastic sects had different fighting styles. The Sun Soul and the Sword Saint Sect were both relatively pure physical combat disciplines. To them, magic such as ki was merely a means of strengthening themselves, improving their fighting techniques, and enhancing their constitutions. They were completely different from combat-oriented Mages or someone like Aaron, who had one magical trick after another.
Some monastic sects, however, fought much like wizards. To them, ki was little different from magic. For example, Kong had once mentioned that Monks of the Way of the Four Elements specialized in using Ki Magic to fight at range. Such Monks could even cast Fireball with Ki Magic.
But any discussion of Monks had to mention one core ability: every Monk who reached Elite rank could master a special technique called Stunning Fist. During close combat, this ability allowed a Monk to use the ki inside their body to directly disrupt the magical elements within an opponent. If the enemy failed their Constitution save, they would become Stunned-unable to act, speak, or dodge.
That put the Monks who specialized in ranged Ki Magic in an awkward position, because a technique as powerful as Stunning Fist could only be used in close combat.
As a Sword Saint Monk, Maximian had an even more balanced set of abilities than Kong. The Natural Weapons he had chosen were the longsword and the longbow.
The longsword had been his preferred weapon during his military training as a highborn noble, while the longbow had been his favorite weapon for hunting and fishing in
