The bald Singer wanted to leave Hell.
The Archdevil revealed a little of his past to Aaron—his original name was Morgan, and he had been born in Greyhawk's crystal sphere, where he was a famous merchant.
In Greyhawk's crystal sphere, the bald Singer's business had once been truly enormous. At its height, his conglomerate had spanned numerous industries, including property, spices, grain, weapons, coal, clothing, timber, medicine, and more.
Even Mank, Greyhawk's god of merchants, had cheered and applauded him.
His ego swelling, the bald Singer had proudly announced to everyone at his fiftieth birthday banquet, "Next, my goal is to make money off angels and fiends."
The angels of Mount Celestia had merely laughed off his declaration. It was later confirmed that the news had even reached Barachiel the Messenger, one of the Celestial Hebdomad, but he had said nothing either.
The devils in Hell, however, recognized a perfect opportunity.
Mammon, archduke of Minauros, the third layer of Hell, appeared in the bald Singer's dream and showed him staggering wealth that dwarfed that of realms and planes alike.
"Want my wealth? Then come. All my wealth is here, at the very end of Hell's third layer!"
Tempted, the bald Singer chose to gamble against Mammon. Using their respective fortunes, the two engaged in an ultimate showdown known as "soul futures."
The bald Singer could not tell Aaron the details of that contest. He was still under Mammon's control and therefore could not describe it at length. All he could say was that, in this contest of wit and courage, he had briefly gained the upper hand. In the end, however, he could not match Archduke Mammon's virtually limitless wealth. After a desperate struggle, he had fallen, losing his soul, the wager, and everything he owned.
