Night had deepened. Winter snow blanketed the streets of the Sunset Lands, and apart from a handful of street corners and alleyways, there was no light at all. The entire town had sunk into the exhaustion that followed the festivities, staging a silent pantomime with only the wind for sound.

Occasionally, a few drunks wandered around in twos and threes. Most were farmers who had finished their odd jobs or workers from the smithies, enjoying a cup of warm liquor after a day's labor.

Maximian had once told Aaron that these drunks should be forbidden from drinking on the streets late at night.
