Background / History

Alusair entered a military camp at thirteen, when she did not expect to inherit the throne. Beginning in her teens, she campaigned beside Azoun IV for nearly ten years and accumulated numerous military honors. She also served alongside Aaron’s father, Manuel Salian 28 115 559.

Her father’s death in battle and her elder sister’s death in childbirth left Cormyr in a succession crisis. Supported by the Purple Dragons and War Wizards, Alusair seized Suzail and declared herself regent without the Kingdom Council’s approval. Duke Caspar, her brother-in-law and the late crown princess’s husband, disputed her authority and sought outside support 12 29 91 111.

Although she had a strong claim to the throne, Alusair initially lacked the legendary strength, international prestige, and personal loyalties that had sustained Azoun IV’s rule. Remaining regent rather than immediately becoming queen allowed her to govern while building her own base of supporters 92.

Appearance

  • Build and bearing: Tall and imposing, with a military woman’s stern posture and a carefully maintained royal appearance 6 202.
  • Hair: Long golden hair, described as reaching her waist; often arranged with ribbons, pearls, or a golden dragon-shaped hairpin 202 351.
  • Eyes: Wine-red or deep-crimson, almond-shaped eyes beneath slender golden brows 29 62.
  • Court clothing: Elaborate princess gowns, including a violet-and-gold Duskmoon Violet gown; stockings, gloves, jewelry, and high heels recur in her wardrobe 29 160 221.
  • Military clothing: Purple Dragon heraldry, a diagonal sash, boots, and a blood-red dragonhide cloak representing her battlefield achievements 219 487.
  • Campaign equipment: Wears her father’s helmet over pinned-up hair and a Purple Dragon surcoat over supernatural armor 487.

Personality

Alusair initially governs as an uncompromising autocrat. She trusts her own judgment, makes decisions with little consultation, and maintains a cold public demeanor intended to reinforce her authority. Aaron challenges her habit of seeking affirmation rather than genuine disagreement, and she eventually admits that her position is insecure 91 114 160.

Her severity is tied to responsibility rather than an appetite for war alone. Although she considers herself a warrior, general, and marshal, she recognizes that campaigns consume soldiers’ lives and that she cannot abandon the kingdom to pursue adventure. She places Cormyr’s unity, prosperity, and strength above even recovering her father’s sword 160 370 473 490.

In private, particularly with Charlotte and Aaron, she becomes playful, affectionate, jealous, and vulnerable. Her commanding manner sometimes conceals romantic uncertainty, while her attachment to Aaron develops into a desire for marriage, children, and a shared future 219 241 480.

Her leadership changes substantially over the story. The intimidating regent becomes an approachable, optimistic ruler among commoners while retaining a stern presence before nobles and an energetic command style before soldiers. She also learns to distinguish genuine political dangers from attempts to manipulate her fears 552 553.

Abilities & Skills

Dragon’s Gift

  • Enhances strength and constitution while prolonging youth and lifespan 91 115.
  • Grants sharpened senses and strong resistance corresponding to the dragon’s attributes 115.
  • Allows her to sense Aaron approaching through the rain before Charlotte notices him 113.
  • Provides Dragon Majesty, a fear-inducing draconic presence; Aaron is immune to this effect 219.
  • Her documented traits include Dragon’s Resilience, Dragon’s Breath, and Dragon Strength Enhancement 219.
  • By her visit to Sallyan Castle, her physical strength is sufficient to produce a sonic boom with a punch 299.

Swordsmanship and Close Combat

  • Possesses Master Blind-Fighting and Master Military Weapons Proficiency 219.
  • Uses footwork taught by Azoun IV, combining rapid dodges and parries with a strong defensive stance 219.
  • Defeats Aaron in a no-spell duel, including after his Keeper of Secrets transformation, by exploiting his impatience and attempts to overpower her 219.
  • Teaches Aaron Purple Dragon Swordsmanship, close-combat techniques, and blind-fighting 219.
  • Cuts apart Caspar’s daemonic transformation with the rune-empowered Sword of Azoun IV 233.
  • Helps intercept and injure Cyric’s Greater Doppelganger proxy during the Tifantom campaign 491.

Military Command and Political Judgment

  • Her battlefield record secures early support from the Purple Dragons and War Wizards 28.
  • Uses appointments, rewards, and personal allegiance to build supporters answerable directly to her 92 202.
  • Recognizes that moving against Mannacorn without evidence could fracture Cormyr, particularly while Caspar’s challenge remains lawful 205.
  • Identifies Cyric’s attempt to turn her against Aaron and refuses to provoke the civil war he seeks 552.
  • Coordinates a council strategy with Aaron that combines a demonstration of force with acceptance of the council’s formal vote 559.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

  • Her dragon blood initially causes short-lived episodes of intense physical distress and impaired self-control, prompting her to avoid frequent public appearances 91 160 212.
  • She acknowledges that the blood may have intensified her stubbornness; Aaron identifies her alignment as lawful neutral after its influence 115 118.
  • Her Master-era strength remains inferior to Aegir’s. The Force Dragon breaks her arm, confines her in a Forcecage, and defeats her again in hand-to-hand combat despite Yuumi’s support 299 300.
  • Formal royal rank does not automatically give her command over Aaron’s followers: his officers wait for Aegir’s approval before obeying her request 487.

  • Azoun IV — Father, former commander, and martial teacher. His achievements shape her understanding of kingship, while recovering his sword becomes a personal affirmation of her right to inherit his kingdom 28 219 491.
  • Filfaeril — Mother and Queen Mother. Supports Aaron’s elevation and formally announces Alusair’s accession to the throne 556 627.
  • Elminster — Grandfather. Stories of his adventures, told by Filfaeril during Alusair’s childhood, remain part of her reflections on leadership 331.
  • Duke Caspar — Brother-in-law and rival claimant to the regency. His opposition becomes entangled with Mannacorn’s schemes; Alusair personally destroys his daemonic transformation 29 151 233.
  • Eleanor Dinefleur — Rival for Aaron’s affection. Alusair’s refusal to recognize Eleanor’s romantic place in his household contributes to their recurring hostility 241 298.
  • Aegir — Aaron’s dragon partner and a hostile romantic rival. Their similar pride fuels physical clashes, while Aegir’s authority over Aaron’s army exposes the limits of Alusair’s control 299 300 359 487.

  • Mannacorn Anaheim — Bane Godspawn seeking to control Cormyr, including Alusair herself. His influence over Caspar and sections of the military makes him a threat she cannot initially confront without evidence 151 205.

  • Funds his magical education while requiring six months of Purple Dragon training, with his trainee status and stipend dependent on passing the assessment 29.
  • Ends his recruit training after his victory at Eveningstar, grants full Purple Dragon knighthood and 1,000 gold lions, and orders his deeds publicized 62.

  • Aaron later surrounds Suzail, detains royal hardliners, and requests her hand in marriage under overwhelming military pressure 624.
  • Publicly condemns the officials who propose marrying her off, then signs the contract to preserve peace. Her acceptance leaves the court politically indebted to her 625.
  • Becomes Cormyr’s seventy-third monarch by unanimous council approval. Aaron returns Azoun IV’s royal seal and the lost Dragon Crown, then crowns her 627.
